It is a small family business and we take pride in offering accommodations that are both exceptional and reasonably priced. Everyone should be able to come visit this astonishing island. Hosting Worldpackers participants provides yet another avenue for people to experience Hawaii, regardless of their income bracket. Our guests come from every corner of the world and our place is frequented the most by European visitors, who are looking for a more genuine, less touristic experience.
I find it disheartening that in many hotels, social interaction among guests is not supported and is often discouraged. It is important that social interaction among people remains a fundamental component of travelling to a new place, so we enthusiastically encourage it here.

my stay at hamakua house was genuinely one of the best experiences of my life. i made so many life long friends. the property is beautiful and looks out over the ocean. the work is super easy and takes no time at all most days you can get it done within an hour. i would recommend splitting a car with the other volunteers but it’s not a necessity. honomu is a 20 minute walk & you can bus from there. this was my first work exchange but i felt really safe and have 0 complaints. cannot recommend this place enough. Thanks Houston & Matt, forever grateful for my experience :)

I can recommend Hamakua to anyone!! The workload is super fair for what you get and you’re provided with a handbook that explains everything to you easily. You typically work with 3 other worldpackers and have your own room together, and a kitchen and living room shared with guests. The hosts are extremely kind and the property manager, Houston did everything he could to make us feel comfortable there and let us have fun! Overall I had a great experience and tons of fun and a great experience at Hamakua and the beautiful big island!!

This volunteer experience was something i will never forget. The people i met, the things i learned, and the management all contributed to the great experience i had. the work is very light and fair. renting a car with the rest of the staff is a must. overall this was an amazing first worldpackers experience and i’ve taken many lessons and memories home with me. highly recommend!

I just adored this whole experience. I was nervous when I first got there since the house is pretty remote and it’s hard to know how many groceries to buy with the fridge situation, but after a couple days there, I truly felt like I was at home. Aaron, the house manager, was great about taking us on excursions. The last week I was there, the other volunteers and I rented a car for pretty cheap and that was a great way to get around the island. I had plenty of days just relaxing at the house, walking to the little town of Honomu and enjoying the personal waterfall. I miss it all so much!!

I absolutely loved Hamakua Guesthouse and all the lovely people I met. Truly a life changing experience and a chance to really immerse yourself into Hawaiian culture. I’m so grateful for this experience and absolutely recommend it to anyone given the same opportunity!
