Humboldt Experience Farmstay

Humboldt Experience Farmstay is a working permaculture homestead that strives to teach students, visitors and volunteers about off-grid self-reliant natural living. We are situated along the Van Duzen river and near a protected redwood state park in a very beautiful part of Humboldt county in coastal Northern California. Guests come to enjoy the river, farm fresh meals and tiny home cabins during the summer. Volunteers come for the experience to learn and create new healthy habits in a supportive natural environment. Munro has been offering volunteers interested in self-sufficiency internships and educational farmstays for many years and is passionate about giving people hands on experience that will help them to grow food, build, animals and live simply.

The host of Humboldt Experience Farmstay is Munro, an avid gardener and tiny home builder who strives to create an educational and productive weekly work routine which gives volunteers a real sense of what it takes to be self-reliant. A strong believer in the gold rule and the laws of karma, volunteers can expect to be treated cheerfully and compassionately. The farm is basically built and yet there's always more to do. We strive to do our best and take good care of the garden, farm animals, paying guests and each other. There is a large extensive library, and volunteers are encouraged to learn and grow, using the farm for it's retreat potential and through meditation, journaling, and reading to leave with a vision of their ideal life.

Fun experience located in a very beautiful area. The hours were respected and the tasks were clearly communicated. Great opportunity to be immersed in nature and learn about permaculture.

This farm is beautiful and Munro is awesome! The work is reasonable but its a farm so there’s always work to be done and it can bleed out of the designated working hours. It’s a great place to learn about farming, sustainability, and permaculture—Munro is always happy to share his wisdom. It’s important to note that there isn’t much electricity or service, so it’s prob smart to go into this with the mindset of a digital detox. I had a transformative experience and made amazing connections, and I’ll always be grateful for my time here!

I recommend this experience to anyone wanting an offgrid workstay. He was very flexible with my arrival date and was very accommodating when I arrived later in the day than I expected. I felt very safe in such a new environment, even though it was unlike anything I had ever experienced before. I enjoyed the tasks and being around so much wildlife. Learning about permaculture and living sustainably is valuable to me, and I appreciate that Munro is so open to sharing his knowledge. Munro taught a kombucha making lesson & in general was very helpful whenever we had any questions or curiosities.

This was my first WP experience and it was amazing!! Munro’s farm is gorgeous. Great views of the mountains and a short walk away from the river. I appreciated the work schedule with a nice siesta in the early afternoon. I had plenty of time to read, hang out with the animals, go on walks, socialize with others, and unplug. Munro made me feel very welcomed and made sure that I got what I wanted out of my time there. He even took me out to see the redwoods a couple times. The work is manageable and if things aren’t clear, don’t be afraid to ask questions! I highly recommend!!
