Kula Mana Farms

We are located on the western slopes of Mauna Loa volcano, in the South Kona district, which has all of the tropical fertility for which volcanic soils are famous. Because the farm is a mixed tree plantation, it provides great habitat to an abundance of bird, insect, and mammalian life. We grow avocados, citrus, mangoes, papaya, lychee, mountain apples, pineapple, strawberry guava, cacao, coconuts, and bananas. The availability of fresh fruit and nuts from the farm will likely improve your diet!

"I have so much love for Patrick and this place! A complete newbie to farming, Patrick was patient when giving instructions on how to harvest, prune, and wash the coffee. He listens to volunteers’ suggestions and challenges us to think for ourselves when completing tasks. I learned basic permaculture practices and found a new passion in permaculture design!" - Hanna, Feb 26, 2021

Absolutely recommend 1000/10! Sadly Patrick is selling the farm, but still leaving a smashing review because out of all of my worldpackers and volunteer opportunities this was the BEST! Host was kind, attentive, responsible, and loved to teach and work with the volunteers.

My experience at Kula Mana Farms was great! Patrick(the host) was very helpful, kind, and considerate. The work was hard labor but the hours and amount of work done was a fair amount for the exchange of accommodation given. I would love to work on this farm again and I recommend it for people interested!

My time on Kula Mana farms was so special! The farm itself is so beautiful and abundant. Patrick is a wonderful host and is a great teacher for all of the varied work that you will do on the farm. He always makes sure we have everything we need, and the accommodation is more than enough:) There is plenty of time in the week to explore the Big Island which is full of so many gems to see. I loved to share my time with the other workers on the farm and make connections throughout the island. I couldn’t recommend this place enough!

Kula Mana Farm is full of love and connection- from the people to the wondrous nature :) I happened to be at the farm at the same time as many other fun workers, that is always a plus. Patrick, the owner, is very knowledgeable and kind. If you stay in the Mill House and are prone to forgetfulness, I recommend closing the roof right after working. It can be closed alone but it saves you on stress if you just close it with someone else right after work. With that said, thank you for a great experience :)

I had an amazing time at Kula Mana. Patrick is a great host. He’s very kind and understanding when teaching you new techniques and really seems to enjoy sharing his farming knowledge and experience with newcomers. The only semi-negative thing I have to say about this experience is that you’ll have to learn to co-exist with insects, especially mosquitoes, so definitely bring some mosquito repellent. Overall though, it’s a great experience and I highly recommend this experience to anyone who’s looking to get more in touch with the outside world or learn about permaculture.

Trinity has demonstrated her love of learning and capacity for leadership in her time at Kula Mana. She was always ready to take on new assignments, and before long, passing on her new skills to other guest workers. She is a bright and friendly person, a hard worker, and an excellent team leader. In the midst of the busy and often intense harvest season, she looked ahead to the next things that needed doing!
She will be a major contributor in any guest working setting, I can't recommend her highly enough!
