Providence Hostel and Guesthouse
* We require volunteers to be fluent in English.
* We generally require all volunteers to commit to ONE month MINIMUM (it is possible to volunteer longer, but usually not less).
*We allow volunteers to work just 2.5 days per week, giving you the other 4.5 days off to do your own thing (travel, explore other destinations, partake in the many events at Brown or RISD, take a class, relax, or engage in any hobbies of your choosing). Not too many hostels give you 4 days off per week to do your own thing, but we do :)
ABOUT PROVIDENCE: Voted top 3 in "America's Favorite Cities" poll in "Travel and Leisure" magazine. Providence is a vibrant student city, with a great food culture, many museums, and home to several top universities. Our hostel is 15 minutes walk to downtown, and walking distance to Providence's most famous universities: Brown University (an Ivy League), Rhode Island School of Design (RISD, a top design school), and Johnson and Wales University. We're 20 minutes on foot from the rail line to Boston (1 hour direct to Boston, $11.50 one way) and 3 hours by bus to New York City. Buses connect Providence to most major cities.
ABOUT US: We're 3 friends who met backpacking. We each traveled extensively in off-the-beat spots in Latin America, Asia and Europe. From our love of hostels and backpacking we decided to pool our resources and open a small hostel. We opened in June 2016, so we're still improving and upgrading. Volunteers stay in dorms, but our largest dorm is just 4-5 people, so you're not sharing with too many people. Among the funny quirks at our hostel, we have active bird feeders so you sometimes see beautiful birds from our kitchen window (sparrows, finches, red cardinals, woodpeckers, blue jays). And we have a cat. The hostel is a work-in-progress, this is by no means a "polished" product. We're small and more like a family, so this is NOT a party hostel. We host travelers, "J1 work and travel" students, local students, backpackers and gap year travelers.
This gig can be as simple as you wish (checking guests in and cleaning)... or as creative and skill-enhancing as your spirit desires. If you're entrepreneurial and looking for creative ways to make extra money, we're open to letting you market your own special skill to guests (like organizing paid cook-outs... or reiki....or yoga... or giving paid guitar lessons or language lessons ... just to give you some ideas). Basically, just like in life, it's upto you what you get out of this experience...... and if you're looking to hone more advanced skills (like marketing... or your entrepreneurial side... or your artistic/design talents...) this can be a really cool gig. Excellent for friendly, motivated self-starters with strong imagination and can-do attitude.
