The scenery and community in Kidatu are absolutely beautiful. The children are sweet and loving. Sadly, most volunteers come to play and travel a little so its easy to make the mistake of not questioning everything they are told and being a bit blind. Communication and direct honesty have to be improved by the host. I recommend that volunteers always ask questions, personally get involved and never leave anything up to chance; whether thats transport, organization or issues with money. We have had some donations put to question as we did not always know where and how they were put to use.

The kids at the school are wonderful and they really need help from volunteers. We managed to raise some money and buy 70% of the textbooks needed for class, we gave the kids those books personally. The money for the remaining 30% we sent after our return. Today, months later, the books have still not arrived and given that Jema has failed to provide a single peace of proof of order, we believe that he took the money meant for the kids and spent it elswhere. We also realized that he overcharged us for foods we ordered through him. Even though the kids there need help, we cannot recommend this

Great experience but be mindful you are travelling 6 hours from Dar which I didn’t know until getting there, I also ended up unexpectedly sharing a bed with another traveller I had just met. This project could be organised for the volunteer!

Overall I enjoyed my time at St Justine’s, although it was not straightforward. The kids are wonderful and made everything worth it, but unfortunately I spent a lot less time with them than I expected. The project needs a lot more organisation and better communication, particularly on airport pickup and school timetables. Jema's son and wife were friendly and helpful. I spent more money than I expected due to buying extra things to supplement the diet. I'd recommend to anyone looking to experience real African culture, but be prepared on what to expect. Message me with any questions :)

doing volunteering at the st. justine school in kidatu was a great experience! It was my first solo travel and absolutely worth it. Jema is a great man, he does everything he can to support the children and help their education. the children are lovely, you need to be patient with them. you are free to create the classes the way you want, i thought them mainly the tenses in english.
I also brought school supplies so if you go there it’s great to bring school equipment because it’s very expensive in tansania. I also brought balloons for the children which they absolutely adored.
