Walk with donkeys sanctuary

If you love nature and relative isolation this is the place for you. Scenery is stunning and animals are of course adorable..there are a number of places to walk in the area, watch the vultures soaring overhead, relax in the quiet of the traditional village.

I hope to treat volunteers like one of the family. In summer months we go to the beach most afternoons or can give them a lift to town. The work is looking after the animals, cleaning their areas, feeding, brushing, and helping us with any other chores around the farm that need doing. This can be fixing fences, stacking wood, general cleaning etc. We have, at the moment, 3 rescued donkeys 5 horses and a mini shetland pony. Dogs and cats. Age and ill health mean that we need younger and fitter people to help with the hard manual labour. I need cheerful people who are willing to help with anything that needs doing here at the sanctuary. Volunteers can live in our house in the village of anatoli or in a tent at the sanctuary where we live. From the house it is a beautiful 30 minute downhill walk to sanctuary in the morning. I eill give you a lift back up after your shift. Summer months can be very hot so most maintenance work will be done in spring autumn and winter. We do not accept smokers…sorry! It is important to me that you are a cheerful, empathetic and easy going person, mature and responsible. There is Wi-Fi at the house.

The donkey sanctuary was one of the best experiences I have ever had. The animals are sweet and the work is exactly as described. The village is beautiful and extremely peaceful. The one thing I would point out is that is it very isolated, and if you don’t have a car, it is hard to get into the main town of Ierapetra. Suzy goes down to a lot and will always offer rides but just wanted to call this out as this ended up being something that was important to me personally. However the peacefulness I felt in the house/sanctuary/village was something that will stay with me forever.

I had a wonderful time at the sanctuary, Suzi was very welcoming and I enjoyed my stay. The animals are all so cute. The house is very comfortable with everything you could need and it's in a very quiet space with a taverna close by and the locals are very nice. The work is not difficult and I was usually finished by 11:00 which is a relief because it gets very hot in the summer! The town of Ierapetra is very pleasant to visit and Suzi is very kind for giving lifts down there. Omnivores please note that you will be eating a meat free diet as Suzi and Alistar are vegetarians :)

I had such a nice time at the sanctuary. Suzanne was nothing but nice, understanding and accommodating. The work as described in the app, and the walk down to the sanctuary was the best way to start the day. We usually finished before 11 AM and had the rest of the day to ourselves. The house is a bit old but it had everything we needed, and Suzanne made sure we were warm enough.

I really enjoyed my time working with Suzanne at the sanctuary. Her and Allister were both friendly and welcoming and I had the house to myself most of my stay because I was the only volunteer. The house is very comfortable in a small village, but it is a little isolated so as long as you are ok spending time by yourself you will be all good!

The work itself was like described. I fed and watered the animals each day and cleaned the pens and helped with other tasks as needed. I even learned a little about animal wound care. The work was never excessive and I enjoyed it. Thank you so much!!

I had a truly wonderful time at this sanctuary. Suzanne was extremely welcoming and shared with me a lot of great stories about herself and her animals. The walk I would take to arrive at the sanctuary always had a beautiful sunrise view and that set the tone for the whole experience. Not to mention all the kitties who live at the house I stayed at! This was a great way to connect with the land and the animals. I felt serene and also like I had a successful day of work every day. I would consider traveling to Crete again just to visit the farm.
