Waponi Amazon

"Welcome to our community! There are several reasons why we believe you should choose us as your volunteer destination. Let me mention some of the main ones:

1. Breathtaking natural landscapes: Within our community, you'll be surrounded by stunning natural scenery. From refreshing yourself in a small stream that originates from the mountains, to exploring completely natural trails leading to waterfalls, mighty rivers, and long walks beneath giant trees. The beauty of nature will leave you speechless.

2. Cultural immersion: Here, you'll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the daily life of the Amazonian indigenous people. You'll get to know their culture, language, and customs firsthand. It will be a rewarding experience that allows you to understand and appreciate their way of life.

3. Connecting with the youth: You will meet the children in our community, who attend school and enjoy games and activities in harmony with the environment. Their smiles and their ability to interact with nature will captivate and inspire you.

4. Accessibility: Although we are located in a remote area, accessing our community is not complicated. You can easily reach us during any season of the year, making it convenient for your participation and enabling us to welcome volunteers at any time.

We are excited to have you in our community and share a unique and enriching experience with you. We hope you join us soon!

My name is Moi, I am an indigenous Ecuadorian. My mother is Waorani, and my father is Kichwa. Lastly, we have Esther, who is the teacher. We are the ones who will welcome you into our home. I consider myself a fun and friendly person, and if time permits, I could be a good guide and ensure that you have the best possible experience in our community. Speaking of my mother, she is a strong, hardworking, and wise woman. She can teach you about the ancestral weaving techniques of our handmade crafts, which I'm sure you will love. She can also share stories about our indigenous worldview, the elders, and more. My father is also a strong and hardworking man. If you engage in conversation with him, you might find that it's hard to stop talking. He loves sharing stories of all kinds and could even try to teach you the native languages that we know. Esther is the teacher who has been accompanying us for over a year, providing education to the children in the community. Currently, she has 16 children from different ages and levels attending school in 2020-2021. It would be of great help to her if you could assist her in the classes. We will treat you with respect and equality, just like everyone else in the community. When you arrive, my home will be your home for as long as you wish to share with us.

This position is for bioconstruction in Arajuno, while what I ended up doing was helping out in the school in Obepare, where Moi lives (about 1h from Arajuno). Despite previously asking twice, I was told the exact location only on the day of my arrival, when it was then too late to get to Obepare and I had to organise a last minute stay in Puyo. Overall, Moi didn't seem to care much about my stay there, so much so that at some point he left for Puyo without much explanation. After two days of him being gone, and without knowing when he would be back, I then decided to cut my stay short.

I had an incredible time during my stay in Obepare. The jungle has a lot to offer if you’re open to new experiences, feeling out of your comfort zone and doing the best you can independent of the circumstances. Moi is a very interesting person but was not very present during my stay. The other volunteer and I were left in the house by ourselves a few times with limited communication with the hosts. The experience with the kids at the school was rich! The teacher is a very caring person! The school and the center of the community are 35 min walking from the house! Be prepared to walk a lot:)

I drove on my bike 🏍 and it’s tough to get the community, there are taxis that will take you there for $15-$20. Besides that, the experience is great! Moi is awesome and his family/ friends are great as well and so helpful, my bike had one part damaged, they helped me fix it, I wouldn’t have made it back without their help.

The experience is not for everyone, you are literally inside the jungle, insects of all kind are everywhere. Bathroom is the jungle itself. Shower is the river, washer is the river as well, dryer is the air.

There’s wifi but little bit slow and limited.

Moi, Fiona, and Tito are friendly hosts.
the place is deep in the jungle, very unique experience. beautiful nature.
and there is still some wifi available to stay connected.
spider monkeys fun to play with.
it was great to see the community arajuno. an intact community living with very little money.
lots of food was fried with vegetable oil :(
the school and arajuno is a 35 minute walk away from where moi lives. so it can be a little hard to be at school regularly.
I learned some permaculture but want to learn more.
