Travelers will greatly benefit from volunteering with us. We are very close to everything in Hilo and have so much to offer. Our staff also have access to a shared vehicle, and we absolutely love sharing tips about traveling around Hawaii.

We have created a wonderfully comfortable and fun environment. Our team members can expect to be treated with kindness and respect at all times. We work collectively as a team to create a unique and beautiful Hawaii experience. There is a very relaxed and light work environment, and we strive to ensure our volunteers greatly benefit from their time here.

My stay at Wild Ginger Hotel was disappointing. A month before we arrived, the hotel was sold, and we learned of it through another volunteer. Promised amenities like a car were removed, and the new owner was slow to provide food, often missing items. Security was poor, leading to an inappropriate guest incident that the owner ignored which made us feel unsafe. I left a week early due to safety concerns. Living with others was challenging, especially with unexpected male volunteers despite a female-only promise. Overall, try not to let these issues ruin ur time in Hawaii if u choose to come.

My experience at Wild Ginger was okay for saving money, traveling, and meeting people, but it did have significant issues. We were informed just a week before arrival that the hotel had been sold and the new owner wasn’t continuing the volunteer program. By the time we arrived, there were 10 volunteers, but only 3 remained by the 4th week. The new owner provided a weekly food budget that was insufficient for the number of volunteers, leading to frequent food shortages.The most concerning issue was safety; there were no locks on doors, making it easy for unauthorized guests. msg me for + deets.

I was hoping my experience was going to be like the reviews I read where you meet life-long friends and immerse into a tight-knit group. There was a tight-knit group, however, it wasn't easy to join. My friend and I only speak English so we were immediately excluded from most of the group since most girls spoke Spanish and English. They would only speak in Spanish just in front of us and it was awkward because I never knew what was going on. There was a lot of immature behavior and maybe I am just too old for this now, but it did negatively affect my overall experience.

My stay at the Wild Ginger was definitely a unique experience i will always be grateful for, the host is generous and kind and hawaii is a truly heaven on earth!
Nevertheless there are some things that you should consider before applying to the exchange:
You are living without supervision or security alone with a group of people from all over the world, so this is not a beginner’s exchange. Make sure that you best have prior experience working in the industry since you will be running the hotel alone, know how to communicate, make compromises and be responsible person
