Kind of funny how we talked about reviews in general and -if I remember right- how we agreed that it is sometimes better to leave no review than an inappropriate review as there are always two sides of the story. So here is my side and even though I decided not write a review for the above reasons I do not want to leave yours uncommented.
You are the happy-go-lucky type of person which is nice but also in your case leaves me with a few trust issues. When you came and just took food from boxes in the basement without asking, I already thought that if I were you I would have asked before taking it in the first place. We talked about it. Later on during your stay it would also have been easy to ask if it was ok to use any of the things I bought for the hostel shop.
The way you make it sound now is that every guest would also easily pass by the food and drinks that disappeared. That is not the case. I store them in different places and shelves in the private rooms in the basement and they disappeared over a longer period of time than any guest had stayed. Guests unfortunately do also take things with them such as cutlery or mugs, books or games. Not nice either. But no need to search the basement (which is only unlocked while we are around) for food as all those things are available for taking and "forgetting" to pay in the little hostel shop box upstairs.
There are still some unanswered questions and they most likely will not be answered as only you will know. The explanations you gave me did not convince me but, as I wrote to you before, I need to draw a line and let it go. I am sorry for not addressing the issue while you were still here and be more clear about it.
And this is to my future volunteers concerning Sabrinas other remarks about staying at my hostel:
The Basement is colder than the rest of the house. If it is a hot summer it can be nice that way. In cold summers I can provide you with an extra blanket for the night and in very cold summers I even have a heater. Basement sounds a bit like prison, but the rooms have nice big windows to open and let some warm summer air in.
Communication is not necessarily via mail, though I would not think that they take up lots of data. Text messages and calls are possible, too, whatever you prefer. Also smoke signals from the bonfire are an option.
In July and August the hostel is very busy. So be prepared to run into some noisy kids (or teenagers or grown ups). If you prefer a quite stay please come in spring or autumn. Most of my guests are lovely people and in a relaxed holiday mood, though.
When I do not immediately take your suggestions for improvement into action please do not be disappointed. It sometimes takes a while as I am not the fastest anyway and when it is high season days can be long and my head is full with other things. But they will not be forgotten.
And finally: I will do my best to talk more openly about the things I do not approve of. Please so the same!
