An organic farm is a place to learn about a more environment-friendly lifestyle. Volunteering on an organic farm can help you reconnect with nature or increase your awareness of how you can help prevent environmental problems, even at home once your trip is over! Organic farming involves much more than choosing not to use pesticides, genetically modified organisms or antibiotics. Most organic farmers work in favor of holistic sustainability, environmental awareness, self-sufficiency, food security, and food safety.
You can be a farm volunteer in Australia, the place where Permaculture was born! Australia also has the largest organic agricultural area in the world. If English isn’t your first language, you can volunteer in a farm in the UK or USA and learn by immersion for a much cheaper price than a language school. You can also be an English teacher as a farm volunteer in Costa Rica, Brazil, Argentina and other similar countries.
Wanna go to farm for volunteer work in Europe? You can volunteer in a farm in Italy, for example, picking grapes and learning how to make great mediterranean wine! If you like hiking, amazing mountain landscapes and a colder climate, how about being a farm volunteer in Canada?
If you feel like working with animals on farms, remember that your routine will adapt to the rhythm of nature. Beautiful isn’t it? That means, for example, that if you volunteer with milk cows or chickens, remember that they wake up very early and you might have to wake up with them! If you want to be friends with cute little pigs, remember that they love mud. To be short, be ready to get a little dirty, be on rustic environments and have a lot of fun!
Volunteering in a farm isn’t only about getting dirty (although that is part of it, for sure!). You can work with animals, plants, learn about plant species, how to deal with different kinds of seeds and fruits, get to know endemic flora and fauna in the country you’re visiting - from the point of view of a local! Many farms follow the principles of Permaculture, so you can learn about organic farming, vegetarian recipes and sustainable living in general. You’ll help doing chores like building a barn or cooking for everyone.
