Biológicos do Juncal

May 2025 update :
This period we will focus on vegetable gardens and bees

Welcome and thank you for your interest in coming and joining this agriculture project that we started and fantasised some years ago.
We are working to connect the fantasy to the reality, maintaining our ideals and goals, wich revealed to be quite a challenge.
The goal of the project is to produce good quality agriculture products for the local community. The region of Bragança. Good quality means organic, no poisons in the product, no poisons in the soil and water, an ecological attitude with our environment. That's what we want to accomplish.
At the moment we are much better farmers than before and understand better how things work. Mostly we learned from doing and observing. But still the project is in a phase we consider initial. We are still trying to manage all the diverse tasks we proposed to do, that are a lot.
Your help is welcome and it’s a pleasure for us to share this project with everyone who fits this idea or wants to try it, to contribute for it, to be part of it.
UPDATE: at the moment we dont have much free time for the farm. Please expect that you can be on your own a lot of time. At the same time we wont be very demanding. You do what you can.

THE PLACE
We live in Bragança and the farm is 5km north in a village called Oleirinhos.

PHILOSOPHY
Here is a document we tried to create so you can know a bit more about the spirit and some info how things work. This document can be changed and discussed of course.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vQFxnVINdPdFHHV3sOPQYcb-2uGyxLnec-1Fs_DNh_bVLrKXdajUbaiJWTXfHfqZ2Ze6LC699B6leo4/pub

OUR CONTACTS
The first contact should be through the platform. Then we can trade direct contacts so we can char more easily and clarify any doubts.

We started this adventure because we love nature and decided to leave our big city life to live more close to the land. We both had memories of living in the countryside of spending our vacation with our grandparents.
The farm is very diverse and we know a bit on all the production we do. We are happy to share our knowledge and ideas. We are doing this because we are passionate with agriculture, nature and a more simple way of living.
Expect we will try to make your stay a pleasant one, considering our farm living possibilities.

Bad things to expect (confession):
We are not organized. Since we have so many things to do, a lot of times we decide things late and we still don't know how to organize.
We are imprisoned to a funding situation (we are in a phase of investment and still paying the project instead of returning money from it) . This means sometimes we cannot decide what to do and have to do what the project demands. We hope to leave this situation soon because it is a bit heavy emotionally and it causes stress sometimes.
We have family work/issues outside the farm. It means it will happen that we say we take half an hour and we’ll take 2 hours or miss our arranged schedule. Hope your understanding on that and we’ll try to define stuff so you are not depending on our failures and can manage without us.
We tend to want to do more than we can and that is maybe the cause of being unorganized. The same way we plan to show you everything but at the end .. sometimes we can :)

Food
We are vegetarians and when we eat together the food should be vegetarian or vegan if there are people with vegan diet with us. At the house the group should decide what kind of diet they want and each one is free to follow their diet.
We will try to provide all the ingredients so you can have a diverse, rich, healthy diet. At the same time we'll try to follow a self sufficient way of eating so we should promote the consumption of the product we produce in the farm as much as possible.
The things we provide are dependent on people requests and we will try to deliver your requests. We will try to make you happy with the food provided but don’t expect luxury.

Food Comments
You make a shopping list once a week and anything else needed you can also ask but expect we can take it to you 1 or 2 days later.
We can and should use all the things at the farm. There is a lot of wastes in farming so we should give priority to the things that are not sellable and in perfectly good conditions.

Accomodation
There are two options: Either you camp in the fields or live in the house we have in the village.

The House - Oleirinhos
The farm is 5 minutes walk to/from the house.
The kitchen is basically equipped and there's a laundry washing machine.
4 bedrooms, a living-room/extra bedroom, 1 balcony, 1 dinning-room used as a workspace, one open space with a stone hoven.
This house belongs to our family and we borrowed it so we could receive people. We want this stay to be part of the experience and we all should promote the house as a confortable space for the people that pass and also a place where we can get together and share ideas, conversations, etc. It could be a project of its own because its a big space we are still trying to figure out how to use it. Hope you can help.

The region
We will try to organize sightseeing together so you can get to know the northeast corner of Portugal.
At the same time, there will be information at the house so you can have your free time and bike, walk or drive into the most beautiful parts of this region.

Internal organization:
- We use a whatsapp group to communicate ( jokes, general info, schedule details, farm info,... anything)
- The shopping list should be sent to the whtssapp group
- We should define a common schedule every week and warn in advance to the whatsapp group if you need a modification

Other informations:
We provide you bicycles so you can use as transport to the city or to go enjoy the scenary.
We have internet at the house but its limited in downloads. Use it responsibly.
There is a BUS that passes 3 times a day near the house and goes to the city and the villages nearby.

It was a great experience to be here! Pedro was respectful and friendly in every moment and work was not difficult. The house you stay at is big, you have your own room and the shared areas are very clean. Sunrise view in the mountains is amazing! You are provided everything you need to cook (no meat) and have bikes at your disposal to explore the place. Working hours are as described and always flexible in case you need to change or want to go explore the near towns. Plus you work at your own pace and get to learn about organic farming. I would definitely recommend this volunteer to eve

I was supposed to stay for 3 weeks, but i was only there for 3 days.. If you don't mind living in cold and dirty house with old men, and doing hard work during the days, this might be for you. I think the vibes of the host was not the best, unfortunately. He was nice to me, but to some people he spoke kind of rudely. This experience made me really appreciate my life and living circumstances at home though.😊 Also this is good place to save money because they provide the food, and there is not anything around you could accidentally spend your money on.

I really liked working there. The farm is so big and there is another long term volunteer living there, who is a really nice guy and an amazing cook. You have a big house for yourself and a cozy fireplace in the kitchen. In the winter it's a bit cold there, so bring warm clothes, but outside it's still really nice. Also the host and his wife are such nice people, who motivate you and help you sometimes. I can recommend working there on this project.

It wa great to meet Pedro and to work on the farm with the other volunteers. We did a variety of tasks on the farm and enjoyed each others company in the farm house. The tasks were varied and were communicated to us via WhatsApp from Pedro. Pedro provided us with food supplies and we did a mix of meals together in the house. Unfortunately due to Pedro's other commitments he was not at the farm too often but there were always tasks to do and he did drop in and work with us sometimes.
