Gundested is a historic campground and nature-based community located in the Danish countryside, around one hour from Copenhagen. The site has been part of our family for three generations, and today we are working to bring new life, energy and ideas into the place while preserving its special character.
Gundested is not a traditional campsite. It is a large, green space with small camping gardens, woodland, old buildings, communal areas and plenty of room for creativity. During the summer, it becomes a lively community of people who spend time in their gardens, enjoy nature and participate in activities together. At the same time, there are many corners of the site waiting to be improved, repaired, redesigned or simply given a little more love.
We are looking for practical and creative people who would enjoy becoming part of this process. You might be a carpenter, builder, gardener, designer, artist or simply someone who likes working with their hands and making things happen. Couples are very welcome, especially if you bring different skills and enjoy working together.
The experience is designed to give you a high degree of freedom. We do not want to give you a long list of identical tasks or tell you exactly what to do every hour. Instead, we would like to begin by walking around Gundested together, looking at the possibilities and talking about what interests you. From there, we can agree on a project that matches your skills, your curiosity and the amount of time you will be staying.
You may want to build or repair something in wood, renovate part of an old building, create outdoor furniture, improve a communal area, work in the gardens or develop a completely different idea that suits the place. Some projects are small and can be completed in a few days, while others can become a focus for several weeks. What matters is that the project is realistic, useful and something you feel motivated to take ownership of.
There will also be practical jobs around the campground, including painting, maintenance, clearing areas, gardening, organising materials and helping prepare the site for guests and activities. We try to balance these shared tasks with the opportunity for you to create something of your own. You should be able to look back at your stay and feel that you contributed something visible and meaningful.
We value independence, initiative and open communication. You do not need to know everything before you arrive, but you should be comfortable taking responsibility, asking questions and finding solutions. We will provide direction, materials and help when needed, while also giving you the space to work in your own way. If you already have an idea for a project, we would love to hear about it.
Outside the agreed working hours, your time is your own. You can relax in nature, explore the surrounding countryside, meet people from the community or visit Copenhagen and other parts of Zealand. We want the exchange to feel flexible and human, with enough structure to make the work meaningful and enough freedom for you to enjoy your stay.
Gundested is a place for people who like nature, community, practical projects and the satisfaction of creating something real. If you are looking for a highly organised programme where every day is planned in detail, this may not be the right experience. But if you are proactive, curious and excited by the idea of helping shape a place that is still evolving, we would be very happy to welcome you.
