The Experience

We are a "glamping" campground 10 miles North of Hilo, Hawaii (on the Big Island) near the tiny farming town of Honomu and the legendary Akaka Falls on the beautiful Hamakua Coast. We live off-grid which mean we get most of our power from solar panels so we are providing an eco-friendly place to say. We need help with tasks such as laundry, housekeeping and light maintenance.

My month at the Hamakua house was amazing! It is located in such a beautiful spot with great nature walks in any direction. Mat provides a very comfortable place to live for such a manageable position in the work exchange. I highly recommend this host for anybody looking for a fun Hawaiian experience.

This place is an absolute dream. From the work exchangers to the actual guest themselves. I got to meet several people and build connection that will last a lifetime. The work was incredibly easy and you would be done early enough to have the whole day to explore the island. Definitely recommend if you are looking for an escape of a fast paced life, as this will show you to take it easy and live in the present moment. 10/10 on the views and how beautiful this place is.

Mat was an amazing host. Felt welcomed and valued as a member of the team from day one. He is very clear and concise about how daily tasks should be completed to ensure staff members get the opportunity to explore and enjoy the island. He is very knowledgeable of the local area and culture. Thanks again Mat! Looking forward to visiting again in the future!

Great experience! Very welcoming and everyone was really nice and engaging. Was invited multiple times to go explore the island together after work was done. The work was not that difficult just make sure you’re clean and detail oriented cause you’re prepping space for guests to stay at. The area is beautiful and you get a good amount of free time to connect with nature and the people around you. I hope to make it back there someday!

This work exchange was an amazing experience. You learn, you grow and you live in the nature everyday. Everything about volunteering here was perfect, the staff became friends, the hostel was a great place to hang out in, it really felt like home. Thank you!
