Detroit Adventures

From our 5 years of hosting experience, if you are learning English and plan to stay for a few months months, you will have the best experience. Here's what we can offer: *️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ Help with your English/ Cultural & Language Exchange: We have guests coming from around the world. Staying with us would mean you will be part of it! There is free English class in the city that we can help you to connect to and we will provide further opportunities for daily practice and self-learning methodology for you to get to fluency. Jenny is an avid language learner (fluent in 4 languages, learned 7 and right now self-learning Spanish) and Alex is a native English speaker with West Coast accent. We’ve seen magic happened under our roof, multiple of our volunteers go from 'zero to hero' in English and we are excited to help you to do the same too. :) *️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ To understand a fascinating city and possibly identify his/her own opportunity: Detroit is undergoing so much improvement and it’s an amazing city to be in right now. Since we’ve started hosting, we have guests from around the world who have come here for a conference or a field trip and have fallen in love with the city and eventually decided to buy a house, fix it up and "start" their life here! It’s an exciting time to be here in Detroit and who knows? Maybe you would want to start something here too! *️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ A Fun Place to contribute: Want to meet cool travelers from around the world?! Detroit is becoming an interesting place with a growing diversity. The Movement festival and the International Jazz Festival are big hits. But throughout the year, we have been hosting a lot of people from Europe, particularly Germans and French, and Australians. A lot of them can see the similarity of Detroit to East Berlin after the wall came down so people find it fascinating to see it here now before things change (and things are changing very quickly indeed). PROJECTS *️️Cleaning - Clean and prepare guest room. Maintain and clean the common area, shared kitchen and shared bathroom for everyone. *️️Photography and Videography - We would like help to take pictures and video of our boy James to document his growth. :) If you have video editing skill that will be even better! Our friends and family are all half way around the world and those precious moments of him will help us to stay connected with everyone. We would LOVE to collaborate with like-minded creators. :) *️️Community Garden - We have built a garden next to the house and we can use help to maintain and harvest! In this project, you will help us plant seeds and seedlings, water and weed growing crops, harvest and process fresh veggies. *️️Bike Repair - We love to bike and our location is only 2 miles from downtown Detroit which makes this a great spot to stay if you want to cycle around the city. In this project, you will help us maintain and repair our bicycles as needed for everyone. *️️Art Projects - In this project you will collaborate with other guests, volunteers and staff to create artwork of various kinds. This could involve sculptures, painting, street art, or anything that adds beauty and intrigue to the house. It could also include work done off-site that helps promote the values and spirit of what we believe in. *️️Other Projects - We are also passionate about food, brewing, fermentation and a whole lot of different things. We LOVE collaborating with like-minded travelers so please contact us if you think you would be interested.

Hi everyone, Jenny & Alex here! After taking a pause in hosting workawayers since COVID, WE ARE BACK! ABOUT US We moved to Detroit in 2013 after living in Asia for 5 years. Alex is originally from California and Jenny is from Hong Kong. We met through an internship in Germany. 6 years later, we fell in love while road-tripping through Spain. Alex has a background in tech start-ups in NYC and California while Jenny worked in marketing for L'Oréal in Hong Kong & Germany. We LOVE to travel and have lived and adventured throughout Europe and Asia extensively. In 2013 we decided to move back to the US and thought we would end up in California but when we heard they were tearing houses down in Detroit we decided to check it out. As any open-minded traveler knows, a good place can often be distorted by the media so we decided to do a road trip to see the city for ourselves. After driving through Detroit we fell in love with the city! People here have a lot of heart! There is a spirit of resilience and you can feel the energy as the city rebuilds. OUR HOUSE We live in a big house (a mansion built in 1925) with a fascinating history! The place itself was once a family home but was later converted into a hospital and was eventually abandoned. After buying the place we’ve spent the last few years bringing the place back to life and it’s been our dream to host travelers from around the world. A lot of progress has been made and even more amazing friendships have been built over the last few years. OUR NEW CHILD In September 2021, a new member joined our team - our son James was born! Having a positive impact on our society and hosting travelers for a deep travel experience have always been dreams of ours. We believe through a deep travel experience and the cultivation of friendship with diverse people, we can all better understand one another and we can all become better global citizens. We are excited to have James with us to experience this adventure and we’re now ready to host travelers from around the world again! WHO WILL HAVE A NICE EXPERIENCE With James joining us, we are looking for individuals who like playing with kids. We also need someone who can be self sufficient and independent with the day to day as there will be times when we need to focus on little James boy as well as work outside of the house. A typical day could be that we need your help for 3-4 hours. You might be helping us getting a guest room ready; or playing with James while we get some work done around the house; or on a day when we take James out for activities or needed to go somewhere else to work, you might be helping us watering the plants and keeping the house clean. You’ll also be interacting with our guests from all around so we need someone who’s friendly and helpful. Your English doesn't need to be perfect but we need you to be willing to try. :) From our 5 years of hosting experience, if you are learning English and plan to stay for a few months, you will probably have the best experience. We will be happy to connect you with volunteer programs around (urban farming, soup kitchen etc.) and free English lessons.

The experience was amazing and incredible! We were made very welcome, and had a great stay all the time! The hosts are people with good life, high spirits, receptive and always concerned about the guests and staffs. Detroit, contrary to what many people say, is a good city, it is rebounding again, if it is true, but we made friends who gave us many good tips! I recommend!
