Comuna de Rhiannon

ENGLISH - INFO GENERAL

Location

In 2008, we had a vision of transforming a run-down farmhouse and 15-hectares (38-acres) of over-exploited farmland into a world apart from mainstream culture, where people could grow, heal, live sustainably and regenerate the land while living in community.

Our farm sits on the edge of a plateau with 360-degree views; clouds roll over snow-capped volcanoes and the sunsets still take our breath away! The sun can be hot, the wind can be fierce and the nights can be chilly – but with strong motivation, a wood-burning stove and good company, it’s a great way to embrace the elements!

Activities

The activities we offer and engage with are based on our 5 core values:

*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ Live & Work in Community *️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️

We aim to create an inclusive environment where like-minded people from around the world can build lasting relationships. Families with children and people from minority groups (often LGBT) are all welcome. We are bi-lingual in English and Spanish and come together through work, food, play, relaxation and ceremony.

*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ Regeneration of Mother Nature *️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️

The properties around our farm is mostly arid, mono-crop farmland and sprawling concrete accommodation. We are revitalising this small corner of the world through reforestation, our organic garden and animal care (donkeys, chickens, bees, worms, dogs and cats). Year-on-year we see the land become greener and more abundant in wildlife.

*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ Place of Healing *️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️

We all have faced challenge or adversity to some degree in our lives. For our healing we offer yoga, authentic shamanic ceremonies (including plant medicines and temazcal/sweat lodge), heart circles, massage, reiki, journey sessions and other healing practices. We consider ourselves spiritual rather than religious and welcome people from different backgrounds and belief systems.

*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ Permaculture Principles *️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️

We strive to live in harmony with nature with minimal impact. We are a vegan/vegetarian community which focuses on bio-construction, rainwater harvesting and recycling. Our electric and hot water showers are powered by the sun, while our composting toilets help fertilise the trees and waste plastic becomes bottle bricks!

*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ Personal Growth *️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️

We offer a variety of events and workshops to people within and outside the community to help growth in intellectual, emotional and spiritual ways. Upon request, workshops in massage, energy healing, beekeeping and carpentry are all available.

We created a large multi-purpose hall in which to host more external events – from dance, music and yoga to introduction to permaculture. Through living and working in community, we also offer people the opportunity to develop their practical skills, foreign languages and inter-personal communication.

Volunteer options:

Volunteers are invited to come from anywhere between two weeks, to two months, to two years or more! We ask people to arrive on the 1st or 15th of the month, which enables us to give everyone a thorough tour and creates a group who you can share your journey with!

All short-term volunteers (up to 3 months) receive: 3 organic meals a day, shared accommodation, living essentials (toilet paper, bedding etc.) and the opportunity to experience community living! Volunteers work 25 hours a week spread over 5 days in the garden or on construction projects (5hrs each morning until lunch) and cook 1 meal per day (or equivalent such as evening watering), which takes approximately 2 hours extra.

Long-term volunteers (3 months +) take on added responsibilities and receive added benefits for their ongoing contribution at our farm, including: a preferred choice of accommodation, flexible working hours and time off for extended holidays.

You can charge your electronics in the main building, however we are without wifi and prefer social interaction over technological consumption. All of our grey water goes back into nature where it is purified by plant and wildlife, therefore please only bring natural products for bathing. These products can be bought in Camari (Santa Clara, Quito). Unfortunately we are unable to accommodate additional animals at this time.

Alcohol is enjoyed socially (but responsibly), smoking is permitted outside and we generally go to bed between 8-10pm. We also have a shop where you can buy pleasurable extras (peanut butter, honey, chocolate, coffee, beer, wine, tobacco etc.) and where you may also sell your own handicrafts and goods.

We try to minimise waste and ask you to minimise bringing: plastic bottles, plastic packaging, disposable sanitary towels (we sell moon cups), disposable diapers, commercial cigarettes (we sell tobacco without filters) or chemical-based soaps/shampoos.

We are also developing our seed bank and ask you to bring seeds to share if you have the opportunity.

We are 4 permanent members, from Ecuador, Argentina and the UK. Plus 3 children. Every day you will work directly alongside one of the team.

I enjoyed volunteering at Rhiannon so much that I extended my stay and I'm still here :)
The work is very diverse, and I'm still learning something new every day. It's great to be more in touch with nature. Food is also really good and lots of activities are organized outside of working hours.
The community vibe is really amazing, thanks to everyone who lives here and the other volunteers. I would definitely recommend this place!

From the moment I arrived at Comun de Rhiannon I felt extremely welcome from both the longer term residence and the volunteers. Rhiannon cultivates acceptance, presence, and commitment to community living and good health. During the short time I was at Rhiannon I created lasting relationships and developed healthier, more sustainable habits. The food was delicious, the nature beautiful, and the people kind and accepting. I can't say enough good things about this place. It was very hard to leave and I hope I get to return soon. Thank you to everyone who made it so special.

I absolutely loved my stay at Rhiannon and two weeks flew by in no time. Helen, Fera and Nico are amazing hosts, so welcoming, open and caring.
The work hours are well organised. The tasks are easy, varied, sometimes physical but nothing you can't do.
After work you get plenty of time to enjoy this magical place, it's people and the amazing food.
The communal spaces are beautifully decorated and really cozy.
I cannot recommend this place enough! If you are looking for a place to learn, reconnect with yourself and others this is it!

Everyone here was amazing and so loving, from the other volunteers to everyone permanently living in the community. I was only able to spend two weeks here but I truly feel like we became one big happy family. I would recommend this place to anyone seeking a sense of community and to connect to nature and other people who hold the ideals of love and sustainability so high. I will be coming back for a longer stay as soon as I’m able to. I grew and learned so much while I was there. It was such a safe comforting place to be. I can’t speak highly enough about the people and the place itself ❤️
