ECC School Cambodia

In January 2023, we created two ECC organization branches. One in Thailand, in Sisaket province, and one in Lao people's democratic republic, in Salavann province. We created these in order to provide additional education for free to those who need it in the local community. With the help of volunteers from all over the world, we have helped to improve the lives and opportunities of children from local low-income families in and around the local communities. [SUMMER 2022 UPDATE] The school is in urgent need of volunteers ! The photos you can see on this page were taken before Covid. Back then the school was packed with people from all around the world, unfortunately that is not the case anymore... We'd love to see it shine again like it did before :) ------------------------------------------------------------------- Head Volunteer Needed: The School is in need of volunteer(s) who can fulfil organisational help while also taking on English teaching at the Schools. You will have the opportunity to guide this organisation; creating an organised environment for students and volunteer teachers alike. If you have a background in management, strong organisational skills, and are naturally able to lead a group of people - this school and its students definitely need you. A commitment of a few months could really allow you to see your vision come to fruition here at the School. English Teachers are needed for both the School and the Public School (about a 10 minute walk away) ASAP. More details are below. You'll have the opportunity to teach children English, plan original lessons or use lessons from included textbooks. If you can commit for 1 Month or more you'll have a more positive impact on the students and the community. The classrooms are outside our house and the students are aged 4 - 18 years old. As a volunteer we aim to give you an average of 3 lessons per day, but you could be doing up to 5 lessons depending on your availability and the amount of volunteers staying at a time. We also provide English classes at a local public school. Usually children are not exposed to English in public schools until grade 8 and the quality of teaching is low. These classes are fairly large and can be challenging. With up to 40 children but there are always a minimum of two teachers per class. Students in the public school are used to strict teachers and sometimes they might be unused to Western teaching methods. However, helping to show these students a different way of learning is one of the most rewarding feelings you can experience. We believe that education is the best way out of poverty. Our school offers young students a better chance to succeed in life. Language education is essential for the future of Cambodian children, especially here in Siem Reap with its huge tourism industry. Skills in English and other foreign languages provide a quick path to more lucrative careers for Cambodian children. Our students would really benefit from having access to long-term volunteers and those with any previous teaching experience or a desire to develop their skills in this area. Although we would love to host everyone, we are in need of volunteers who are aged 18+ and who can stay for at least 2 weeks. The longer you stay the stronger the trust between kids and teacher will be, creating a special bond that will allow you to get the best out of your students :) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We are continuously in need of volunteers (for a minimum of 2 weeks) to fill the following positions: ENGLISH TEACHER ------------------------------------- Requirements: Volunteers fluent in English (Native or Non-Native). Some places in Cambodia still have to travel miles to collect water from a well, quite often the water is not fit for consumption. Sanitation is also a major problem in a lot of area's and with our help these projects are being put into place. CONSTRUCTION / GARDENING WORKER ---------------------------------------------------------------- Requirements: Previous construction and gardening experience Duties: Volunteers for this position will help with building of new projects and maintenance the current projects. This work can be combined with teaching. We opened the school in the end of April 2018 and by then we will be needing volunteers at both schools. Please let us know which positions you are interested in when applying and if you are okay with teaching both schools. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RECENT EVENTS In March 2015, we opened “Pagoda” a new school 3 km away from ECC School, in a village called Chriev. In June 2016, we opened classes at the local primary school. We are currently teaching 5 classes here a day to over 300 students. In September 2016, with the help of fundraising money, we commenced two new projects. We renovated our English classroom at public school; washing and painting the walls, sanding the tables, decorating the walls and buying new teaching resources. We have also built new walls in our classroom and installed new power boxes. Walls will be painted with new wall displays. In February 2017, we were continuing building a new school, 5 km away from the main School in Po Village. We look forward to open it after Khmer's New Year in April 2018! September and December 2018 we helped local communities by installing 2 water projects to provide clean drinking water to local families. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WHAT TO DO IN YOUR FREE TIME When you are not teaching or building there are plenty of things to explore around Siem Reap such as the Angkor Wat Temples, the floating village in Tonle Sap lake, the local Crocodile farm, or simply enjoy the beautiful countryside of Siem Reap surrounded by friendly Khmer people. Bicycles are available for free to use to explore. Here we believe in a very positive family orientated culture. We are looking for volunteers who flourish in an environment like this. Please understand that children and their education is our priority so we expect a responsible level of commitment from everyone that wants to join our team. This is an English school trying to empower low resources kids, if you are looking for a cool place to spend a few days taking pictures and sleeping around then this might not be the best project for you. If you come willing to give the best of you to leave a positive footprint for the local population, we are waiting to hear from you! We look forward to welcoming you to our family!

Our names are Savuth and Savon Savuth and Savon founded this community School in March 2014 with the aim of providing additional education, for free, to those who need it in the local community. Since then, with the help of volunteers from all over the world, we have helped to improve the lives and opportunities of children from local low-income families in and around Siem Reap. Anthony has been involved with setting up free schools, organic farming, free English classes in government hospitals and other projects around Asia since 2012. Right now we provide several English classes on site. As such, all volunteers will need to have conversational level English. However please do not worry if your English is not absolutely perfect as any help is appreciated and having a teacher with basic conversation skills is much better than no teacher at all! We hope to reopen other classes in the near future (French, Spanish, Music/Art). As a volunteer, we welcome you to stay in our home. We would love to teach you about our culture, food, and language. There are dorms and private rooms available with free WiFi, drinking water, A/C, fans and huge smiles! If you want to become a volunteer, we provide 3 meals a day and accommodation. You will live in the home of the family who founded the school, allowing you to really integrate and become a part of the family! Staying here means learning a lot about the local culture and yourself, at the same time having a positive impact on Cambodian development from the ground level, which is a truly rewarding experience. Our young organization is not yet able to provide all this for free. To cover the basic costs, including food, electricity, and water, we ask for a minimal donation of just USD 56 per week (USD 8 per day).

I had a wonderful time at ECC school! The minute I arrived I received a warm welcome from Savon and all the volunteers, it was amazing! The teaching was great as well and the kids are the best thing ever, they are so loving and kind and they make it hard for you to leave at the end of you stay. The food that was provided for the volunteers was really good and I even had the chance to do a cooking class with Savon which was great! Unfortunately I got sick and had to go to the hospital the second week I was supposed to teach. But Savon took good care of me and visited me!Great first expierience

Volunteering at ECC was an amazing experience and I was made to feel completely at home and part of a family. The kids are extremely friendly and eager to earn too. My only wish was that I could have stayed longer!

What an awesome experience that was! The kids aren’t always easy to handle but they are awesome to be around. Savon and her family are great leaders within the community and strive to create the best experience for the kids taking lessons. I’m actually extending my stay and helping them open the new school in Thailand. They will be expanding into different countries and need as many volunteers as possible. The teaching foundations are a bit unorganized but we have been working to fix that and make it more organized for future volunteers. The dorms and the bungalows you can stay in are great.

The most amazing experience! You teach at both the local and ECC school (primary & secondary). The teaching is super fun and interacting with the children was so rewarding. Mama and the team are so lovely and helpful! You live at the school so facilities are very basic but the food is yummy and you meet so many great people from around the world. The only reason I haven’t given 5 stars is because I didn’t get to teach for as long as I hoped due to Cambodia New Year but this wasn’t the hosts fault! Absolutely loved it and would recommend to anyone. Will definitely come back one day!
