Gaslamp Hostel

Not only do you get to live in the center of the Gaslamp Quarter which is the heart of the restaurant, shopping and nightlife district, but you get to stay in a cozy and historical location that celebrates the best of San Diego. Our volunteers get to help shape the vibe and atmosphere and learn what it's like to run a hostel . Please note, we have a 'canine ambassador' - an 11lb pup who loves people and giving kisses so if you miss your buddy, you can get some love here.

The hostel partners are long time friends and co-workers with over 20 years of hostel management experience working for independent hostel chains who've decided to strike out on their own. We like to laugh, be relaxed and make sure our guests have a great time and our team feel respected, appreciated and heard. We love new ideas and meeting people from around the world.

This was my first volunteering experience and I loved it ! The location is great, the hostel is located in downtown right on the strip and also the hostel itself is curated and clean . They are pretty serious about how you work , so they point if you miss something or if you take 5 minutes during your shift to have breakfast, but on the other hand this is good because they never let you work 1 minute more than agreed and this is a key important point for me.

It’s a cool place! The staff was very nice. I didn’t talk much to the owners. It’s very serious work, they treat it like your getting actually paid to do it, we only had 15 minute break and if they saw you doing something that’s not work they’ll call you out. I didn’t appreciate that we can’t even have a 5 minute breakfast during shift.

Volunteering at Gaslamp Hostel has been the best thing I've done this year.
The work isn't the most relaxing but it's part of the deal and everything we do has been mentioned to us during the interview.
The managers are always there if you need help and do a great job of recruiting volunteers. The staff were great, and I made friends for life. The hostel is located in Downtown and to be honest it's not the nicest part of SD but there's plenty of public transport to go anywhere and lots of bars in the area.
I'm super grateful to have been able to live this experience.

The exchange was not worth it. The load of work was too much for single person, let alone a volunteer. We were closely watched on camera as we worked and I received a text saying ‘get off your phone’. A behavior I wouldn’t accept as a paid worker either.the atmosphere is not welcoming nor friendly nor fun. I had to wake up once at 5am for a shift which is something I never signed up for. I felt like they expect a lot from you but what you get in return is not worth it in my personal opinion. I have more to say but limited space, text me for more details.

Unfortunately we are not surprised by Costanza's remarks as she left earlier than she committed to because she 'wanted to be at the beach' and had to be repeatedly asked to fulfill the duties she committed to when she accepted the offer. For those reading, our volunteer coordinators thoroughly explain the duties during the interview process and give our applicants the opportunity to ask questions and confirm applicants understand the duties and are willing to fulfil them. That said, the roles are the same as any other quality hostel, including being able to host our activities as part of the role. As for the 'watching' we have security cameras for everyone's protection. On the rare times we tune into the security cameras from it's because we need to check on something that might be amiss. We don't recall this incident. But if it did happen it was probably because once again Constanza was on her phone instead of her assignment, which other staff frequently complained to us about. Please see our other reviews for balance on whether others have had a fun time at our hostel. And on a separate note, we only have 3, 5 am shifts during one week of the year during the annual Comic Con conference and this was discussed in a staff meeting. We asked for volunteers for that shift prior to it being assigned to anyone. Two people volunteered and the third was assigned based on who we felt was best suited and might enjoy getting off shift by 10 am and having the entire day to experience Comic Con or going to the beach, etc.

Gaslamp hostel was my first Worldpackers experience and the whole team made it a truly amazing experience! The whole volunteer group was so lovely and the work was appropriate. Also Maria helped us with a personal problem and did her best trying to fix it, thanks again!
