Seattle is a great place, full of fun cafes and cool funky bars, and a thriving music scene. On your 4 days off a week you can explore mountains to the Islands.
You will work 18 hours a week usually in 6 hour shifts. Winter we ask for a 4 week minimum, and summer a 8 week minimum. In exchange you get all the same privileges as a guest. A clean safe place to sleep and free all you can eat breakfast 7 days a week. On top of our Sunday free dinner for the entire house, there are staff dinner available everyday. I had the most amazing month at the green tortoise. Staff is a stunning group of people I feel so lucky to have met. This was my first worldpackers gig and I could not have asked for a better experience. Thank you to everyone who made it so special. I will carry my experience here in all my future endeavors. I had a great time at The Green Tortoise! I felt like communication between staff and volunteers was smooth and efficient. The tasks were always as described, and the work hours were as stated after the first two weeks. Dinner was always delicious, too! When I arrived there was a new system where I worked a little more initially, but during the last part of my stay I had a lot of free time! The facilities are constantly cleaned and I felt comfortable there. Perfect location with easy access to all of the attractions and nature hikes. I would absolutely recommend The Green Tortoise!

I absolutely LOVED it here but the only thing I think to change is the social aspect.
Yes they hosted events but most of the time you could see a divide between staff and guests. I think too many people hang out in the smoke room and get lost in time there.
The pub crawls need more organization. So does karaoke. But my maintenance position was AMAZING! Sacsha was GREAT leadership as well as haru! Sam and Torin are amazing! The hostel rooms and bathrooms are ALWAYS clean and well maintained by maintenance and housekeeping!
The hours are perfect for people who want to explore or get a 2nd job!

We never actually went to Green Tortoise because we had issues at US Border and Protection. If you are a European and you are going to the United States to Volunteer, never tell the Customs agents this. Because if you do, they will deny you and say you need a Workvisa because getting accomodation and food is considerd payed work to the Americans. Ask your host to send you a booking confirmation of you staying there instead of working, so you can tell them you are going on holiday instead of volunteering. The Green Tortoise was very nice in this process and apologetic that they did not warn us.
