Hostel Knot
We don't want you to simply volunteer—we want you to truly experience life in Japan.
That's why our shifts finish around lunchtime and you'll have **four full days off each week**. We hope you'll use this time to explore Shuzenji, discover the beautiful Izu Peninsula, relax in natural hot springs, meet local people, and create unforgettable memories. Rather than rushing from one destination to another, we want you to experience what it's feels like to live here.
At Hostel Knot, you'll become part of a small, welcoming team and a close local community. Our volunteers often build lasting friendships with guests, local residents, and other volunteers from around the world. Some even find part-time work in Shuzenji during their stay.
The work itself is straightforward, and most volunteers become comfortable with the routine within their first week. More importantly, we hope you'll learn about Japanese hospitality, teamwork, and everyday life while helping us create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for our guests.
If you're looking for more than just free accommodation—if you want meaningful cultural exchange, genuine connections, and memories that stay with you long after your trip—Hostel Knot is the place for you.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about Hostel Knot!
Hostel Knot opened in 2018 after a year of renovation with the help of friends and local residents. Since then, we've welcomed travelers from all over the world to Shuzenji Onsen, one of Japan's oldest and most beautiful hot spring towns. Our goal has always been simple: to create a place where travelers, volunteers, and local people can naturally connect.
I'm Ryohey, the owner. Traveling through New Zealand completely changed my perspective on life. The people I met in hostels inspired me to create a place like that in my hometown of Izu—a place where meaningful connections could happen every day. That's why we named it **Hostel Knot**.
You'll also work with Jamie, our full-time staff member from the United States. She's a second-generation Japanese American, fluent in both English and Japanese, and always happy to answer questions or help you settle into life at the hostel.
Our team also includes a wonderful local part-time staff member who moved to Izu because she fell in love with the area. She enjoys yoga, wellness, and introducing people to the slower lifestyle of the Izu Peninsula. She's incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and someone many volunteers quickly come to rely on.
We're a small team, so volunteers aren't treated as temporary workers—they're part of our community. We believe in kindness, open communication, and supporting one another. Whether you need help with work, learning Japanese, exploring Izu, or simply adjusting to life here, we're always happy to help.
Our hope is that, when your stay comes to an end, you'll leave feeling that you didn't just visit Japan—you truly lived here.
"Shuzenji became my home away from home."
