The Cowboy Bunkhouse Hostel

Have you ever wanted to explore the National Parks of Southern Utah: Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon, Canyonlands, The Wave, and Grand Staircase National Monument? We are an international Hostel, Bed and Breakfast, and Extended-Stay accommodation. Come stay with us and help host thousands of guests from all over the world who come here to vacation. For 5 days each week you will meet travelers, intermingle with the family, give information, serve breakfast, and answer questions. On your days off you can go explore, hike, camp, fish, and play in this scenic playground.

Here are our house rules and caveats... we do not allow any smoking, drinking, drug activity or workers of the opposite sex in bathrooms or bedrooms. You will have a room to yourself or to share with the person you are on shift with. (NOTE: Because we offer full room and board (meals), we do not offer any monetary ($) compensation.) JoAnn grew up in Kanab, Utah and loves the outdoors. For 25 years she ran youth camps in Southern California and has now moved back home to run a hostel. She manages the business side of the hostel, employees, and guests. Jeff has vacationed in Southern Utah many times and now enjoys sharing his love for the outdoors with guests. When he is not telling visitors how to see the sites best he is doing the maintenance of the building: fixing doors, plumbing, cleaning floors, etc.

I stayed at the Cowboy Bunkhouse for about a month with my sister, her kitten, and my puppy. My sister and I both had full-time remote jobs in addition to fulfilling our responsibilities and taking care of our animals and personal things. Joann was very accommodating, understanding, and flexible with our schedules, which we both appreciated. However, to those applying with full-time jobs (and possible young animals), I would caution you to fully grasp the amount of time you have committed yourself to because we really did not get to enjoy our surroundings as much as other staff members.

The Cowboy Bunkhouse is less a hostel and more of a home to the travelers who pass thru - whether they're there for a shower, a night, a month or five. Jeff and JoAnn have built a place where the people who come thru feel a tangible sense they've just extended their family. I went with a simple expectation to see the sights of Southwest Utah while working here - not only were the weekly adventures fulfilled with the nearby canyons, chambers, and trails but I learned many new skills from the kitchen to the campground to the office from the community of people here. Much love for TCBH & crew.

Amazing experience for my first WorldPackers trip! Everything was as listed and the hosts are super friendly. Great place to make new friends from all walks of life. Careful not to get “Ka-nabbed” ;)

JoAnn and Jeff are very open minded hosts who are accepting of all different kinds of people.
The work I completed at the bunkhouse felt like I was making a difference for the future of the property. After a few days of working on the campground, there was a clear difference in the landscape and I felt like the work I put in made a difference.
I have been to a few work stays now and the time I spent at The Cowboy Bunkhouse stands out as one of my favorite experiences. I highly recommend visiting if you are planning on working in Southern Utah.

The Cowboy Bunkhouse is unreal! It is a great place to connect with people from all walks of life. There is always something to do and someone to talk to. If you are willing to work hard, communicate openly, and integrate yourself into the wonderful group of volunteers at the Bunkhouse you will have an amazing time. The owners, Jeff and JoAnn, are very kind and thoughtful people. They expect you to complete your scheduled shifts, and they encourage you to connect with fellow travelers and explore the beautiful sights around Utah during your time off. This has been a wonderful experience for me
