I had an absolute incredible experience at Samaritan Volunteers! Volunteers have the chance to help the community in so many different ways. The organization was really well structured and we always had the possibility to talk to them if we had any questions. Also for weekend activities they help a lot to organize whatever you want.

I cannot recommend the organization enough! Dar es Salaam is a wonderful city with much to do! David and Francesca are amazing about organizing group activities, encouraging you to go on weekend trips and more! I stayed at Asha's house, a volunteer house that holds 7 volunteers, the host mother, and her family! Asha cooks local cuisine for breakfast and dinner. You spend your days at the hospital! I spent most of my time in the ED and surgery; it was SUCH a valuable experience. The doctors and nurses are so kind and helpful, encouraging you to be hands-on and learn! So wonderful!

Had a good time at Samaritan, it took a couples of days to get acclimatized to the new environment, especially in the february heat, but teaching the little kids became a highly rewarding experience. The children at the schools are adorable and eager to learn. Getting to know the friendly staff of the volunteer house was also great and we had a lot of fun. I truly felt the organization has made a big impact on chamazi and the schools it supports, and i am happy to have been able to contribute to these efforts.

I arrived home today, and I already miss it so much. I spent the past four weeks volunteering with Samaritan Volunteers, and I truly regret not staying longer. It was an incredible experience that allowed me to immerse myself in the local culture while making a meaningful impact. The children were so sweet, full of energy and kindness, and always eager to learn and connect. Jackson and Emmanuel, were incredibly supportive—they were always there to help with anything, making sure we felt comfortable and safe. Their dedication and passion for the community were truly inspiring.

My experience in the organization with THO will never be forgotten in my life. All the organization professions I met in the hospital were very welcoming, friendly, and passionate to walk me through clinical practices. I rotated different departments such as ER trauma, labs, labour ward, orthopedic operation room, pediatrics, and ICU. It really helped me narrow down what I am most interested in and yet I wish I had more time to explore other areas as well. As a volunteer who never had clinical experience before, I truly learned so many things about medicine and it influenced my life and career path.

I had an amazing experience volunteering with THO! Dr. William, the hospital staff, and my house mom, Asha, made me feel truly at home during my entire stay. Soon after I arrived the other volunteers became like family. In the hospital, I was able to work along doctors, nurses, and other students in the ER, labour ward and the NICU. I was able to not only exercise my skills but learn by watching doctors closely in action. Everyone in the hospital was so kind and helpful. In my time off I was also able to explore different parts of the organization such as Zanzibar and even a Safari. Thank you again!!

O trabalho foi maravilhoso e as crianças realmente foram incríveis, mas a descrição do projeto não é precisa. Você não ensina esportes em nenhum lugar; você normalmente fica em frente à turma ensinando inglês, matemática e desenho, muitas vezes sem um professor presente (pelo menos em nossa escola). Foi desafiador devido à barreira do idioma, mas muito educativo. A casa era boa, mas traga algo para fazer offline. A experiência foi boa, mas o projeto parecia uma montagem para ganhar dinheiro. Você não vê o dinheiro que paga sendo investido nos materiais e nas escolas. Sinta-se à vontade para me enviar uma mensagem.

Gostaríamos de esclarecer que as atividades esportivas acontecem às sextas-feiras, nosso dia oficial de esportes, e todos os voluntários podem participar, a menos que tirem o final de semana de folga. Em outros dias, os voluntários apoiam inglês, matemática e lições criativas, dependendo das necessidades da escola e da disponibilidade dos professores.
As tarifas do programa cobrem acomodação, refeições e apoio aos nossos projetos escolares, incluindo materiais e melhorias a longo prazo, que podem não ser visíveis de imediato.

Em geral, eu realmente aproveitei esta experiência! Havia muitas atividades disponíveis para os voluntários fazerem após o expediente, desde aulas de dança até vôlei de praia. O ambiente da hospedagem em casa de uma família anfitriã era muito agradável (traga repelente de insetos!!) e aprendemos muito sobre a organização. No entanto, eu penso que houve uma certa falta de liderança no ambiente do hospital e parecia haver uma recepção mista para os voluntários no hospital. O hospital também não é muito movimentado, então os voluntários muitas vezes ficavam sem muito o que fazer. Se isso não te incomodar, no entanto, você deverá se divertir bastante!

Os hospitais aqui, como em muitos países africanos, podem ser mais tranquilos, pois muitos dependem de atendimento privado; então, se as pessoas não podem pagar pelo tratamento, o fluxo de pacientes é mais lento. I joined this project hoping to make a real difference in the community and gain practical hospital experience, but it fell far short of expectations. From the start, we missed the main outreach activity because the program manager forgot to pick up our house. In the hospital, we were left without supervision — the doctor we were paying for was absent most of the time — and received no real training or engagement from the staff. Despite the hospital being decently equipped, there was a clear lack of willingness to involve or teach students. No procedures were done by my part at the hospital.
