Apano Meria SCE
Team members will have the opportunity to experience life on a picturesque island while working together with the local community to protect the Natura 2000 area of the island and promote sustainable practices in agriculture and tourism by helping in a variety of projects and subjects.
Apano Meria is a Social Cooperative Enterprise that is populated by people who have chosen to live, work and study at the island of Syros, Greece. Our goal is to make the natural, geological and cultural wealth of Syros globally renowned, making the area an attraction for activities with both low impact and high quality, as well as creating jobs for young unemployed scientists. We strive to prove, in action, that a sustainable lifestyle can improve the everyday lives of locals whilst attracting visitors who appreciate the peculiarities of the place and need an authentic experience.

I stayed here for two weeks and I wished I stayed for longer. Syros is a beautiful island with a strong local community. Even during winter it is full of life. Apano Meria SCE team is super welcoming and friendly. The work is interesting and flexible. I learnt a lot Greece's environmental policy and was happy that I could contribute with my research. I cannot wait to come back here in the future!

Apano Meria SCE is a wonderful organization with the loveliest people. I did the policy research program for 3 months and I now feel like I have a new home here on Syros. The team is warm, hilarious, hardworking, and dedicated to making Syros sustainable culturally and environmentally. I became completely immersed in the local community and the relaxing flow of island life. The research added to my knowledge base on environmental policy and was a great way to continue my interests post graduation while traveling. The hours are very fair and flexible allowing me opportunity to island hop.

Apano Meria SCE was welcoming and helpful from start to finish, expectations were clear, fair and realistic and plenty of flexibility to shape your own work. The SCE is engaged with the local community, and is a real example of grassroots work in action. I loved being a part of it! I will definitely be back.

I had an incredible two-week volunteering experience with Apano Meria in Syros. The team was highly supportive, and the accommodation was conveniently located just a 20-minute walk from the city center. The work was flexible and engaging, allowing for personal input and creativity. Syros is a gem of an island, rich in culture, and provides the opportunity to interact with locals. I wholeheartedly recommend this experience for those seeking a meaningful adventure.
