Kilmichael House

Our Location is unique and very close to Loch Ness which is a popular destination for travellers globally. In addition we are en-route to the North Coast 500, Isle of Skye,Fort William not to mention the fabulous Western Isles. We provide great safe and very clean facilities for our helpers and take an active interest in them during the time they are with us and try to enrich their experience by either showing them around the area (business permitting and also down to the length of stay -longer stays mean more varied trips). Our business is looking after guests and we endeavour to look after our helpers in the same manner.

I was brought up in the hotel and catering business in my parents properties and then worked for all the big national /international organisations such as Hilton etc, before having my own hotel and pub and laterly my own B & B's so have spent in excess of 40 years in this business. Being professionally trained I conduct my business practices in the same manner as that of perhaps a larger organisation and do adopt their practice standards i.e. risk assessments to staff training and set departmental standards and everyone who joins will get training in how my operation works and instruction as to how the various tasks would be achieved. I operate the property myself with a seasonal self employed part time contractors. Our standards are set high (with additional enhanced hygiene protocols as per Covid-19 government guidelines and these must be strictly adhered to for everyones safety and well being) we operate social distancing and run at present at greatly reduced capacity. The safety of our volunteers is a priority as is our guests. I provide excellent accommodation, meals (carter for vegetarians not vegans), and free unlimited services such as wi-fi/internet/once a week laundry for our volunteers and business permitting and how long a volunteer is with me will show them as much of the area I can). The hours I expect from a volunteer is between 2-4 a day over 5 days during High Season i.e. April- September and in out of season (Oct. - March) it is more like 2-3 over 4 days. I do not believe in exploiting volunteers and they enjoy plenty of free time to themselves but I do ask that they are flexible, completely honest, able to follow instruction/direction, animal lovers and have a great sense of humour. I will give everyone their own space as I have mine but am very happy to engage as much or as little with volunteers particularly when wanting to learn English. I happy to discuss current affairs etc. and respect the opinions of others as I expect my opions to be respected

My experience in Kilmichael House was awesome, I can say that I learnt a lot.
Even I had lo leave sooner than I thought I took the best memories and tips that Charlotte gave me.
Food was amazing and accommodation was impecable and super comfy.
Thank you Lady Charlotte (and the two volunteers I met ) for let me have this great time with you :)
Already back in Europe, hope I can go back to Scotland soon!

Charlotte is abusive, she will yell at you and insult you. She even blamed me for every single problem in my life (including sexual harassment and family trauma), all because I failed to complete a task. She has called me a spoiled brat, a nasty shit, lazy... When I finally told her I was leaving, SHE THREW ALL MY STUFF IN THE POURING RAIN. Everything got wet. She also tried to raise her hand at me.To Charlotte: go ahead, tell everyone I'm nasty and no one should host me. I won't ever bother reading it. I have video proof which I have emailed to the Worldpackers team, so good luck with that.

I do not think I have to say anything other than that you have portrayed yourself above very well even going so far as to describing yourself and warning future hosts to exercise caution when negotiating/communicating/dealing with you.
I am sorry you are disturbed by the serious issues you claim to have experienced in your life especially with other hosts and their guests (via another volunteer site) but throwing hysterics (and all of your belongings into a corridor thereby obstructing exits because you could not be bothered to pack them) and directing your aggression to me/making false accusations in such an arrogant, irrational manner will in no way help you to move forward in the future
I genuinely hope you get help and find peace with yourself in time

My experience at Kilmichael House has been absolutely amazing. Charlotte told us in advance what our tasks will be and when we arrived she took the time to show us everything in detail. The work was not too hard and I loved to walk the dogs after we were done with our tasks. Food (especially Charlotte's selfmade Burgers) was delicious and always the perfect amount. Also, when there wasn't too much work to do, Charlotte took us to the most amazing places and showed us around Scotland. I really appreciate her straightforward but warm-hearted and sincere manner and the great talks we had.

Franzi I loved having you and Lisa here and we (me, Sophie, Riki and Rags are missing you both very much and you will always be welcome here. You are two lovely girls and any host in future will be very lucky to have you. You only have to let me know if you want to visit.
I do not know what is going on with these reviews as mine for you does not seem to appear to be visible (have been in touch with Worldpackers about the matter as it is not much use for you girls) so I have pasted again on here and it is as follows:

It was a pleasure hosting Franzi and during the 2 months she spent here she was willing to help out wherever and whenever she was needed. She has a great attitude and also a great sense of humour. She loved our dogs, cat and sheep and I cannot recommend her high enough. It was a sad day when Franzi left to return home - I and our dogs miss her and Lisa very much especially Sophie our demented, crazy beautiful little dog - still missing you both. I have no hesitation in recommending Franzi to any host and indeed would welcome her back anytime in the future. Thank you both. Charlotte

My experience at Kilmichael house was great! The room was comfortable, we got 3 delicious meals every day and the working hours were fair. Some tasks might seem a bit complicated at first but it gets easier soon and is so worth it. We got to spend a lot of time outside, either with the dogs or with Charlotte on one of our trips. I learned a lot during my 2 months in Scotland and can only recommend volunteering here. Thank you Charlotte - I truly had an amazing time.

I spent five weeks at Kilmichael House and time flew by for me. In January there were not a lot of guests or many people working there, but I never felt like I had nothing to do, thanks to all the hiking options and the help of Charlotte and Dick.
The tasks were not very difficult but specific. The experience helps you to understand how to optimize your work. The meals were generous, the room was comfortable, the conversations could be great debates sometimes, and the animals were a wonderful company and distraction. I thank Charlotte for welcoming me into her house and for all the lessons!
