Longmeadow

Availability from mid September.
In the winter months (November - February) we can only take one volunteer as there is not enough to occupy two people as we are spending much less time outdoors gardening etc.
We are Charlie and Joanna and we live in the countryside near to Cambridge. Our 2 daughters after time spent travelling (and volunteering) are now living in London so our household usually consists of two people and various dogs. I often have dogs to stay, so you need to be relaxed and happy around dogs. We go for long walks with the dogs every day so there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the countryside and depending on the season to join me in foraging for fruit, berries nuts or fungi.
We are about 7 miles from Cambridge but as the last bus is at 7.15 pm not easily accessible if you want a busy nightlife.

We have been hosting volunteers for over nine years now (positive reviews on 3 other sites) and thoroughly enjoy getting to know new people and share our way of life. Both our daughters have enjoyed being volunteers in Portugal, Australia, Peru and New Zealand and their experiences have given us a greater insight into both sides of the relationship. We lead a fairly quiet life, but enjoy travelling (most recently to the Greek islands, Japan and Georgia (the country not the state)) and always enjoy chatting and sharing our travellers tales. We are happy to help you develop your spoken English - we always enjoy chatting and in the process can explain matters of grammar, pronunciation, context etc. but we are not qualified teachers.

Joanna & Charlie are nice and agreeable people, flexible with schedules and respectful with my food requests, which I very much appreciate.
However, I went there under the impression that I would mainly help her with her ‘dog board’ and with household chores. Instead, I cleaned up their house pretty much on my own on a daily basis, regularly completing tasks which were not in the opportunity description (such as window polishing or furniture varnishing) and only cared for the dogs when I accompanied her on the daily walks…
Regardless I learnt new skills, about their culture and gastronomy!

I had a wonderful time in Longmeadow. Johanna and Charlie are wonderful hosts, who not only respected you privacy, but also made sure to teach you about their culture, and asked questions about yours. The tasked you as a volunteer got asked to do are very reasonable, and if you make sure to communicate in advance what your plans are for the day, I experienced that they also are pretty flexible regarding when you finish your work (which was really kind because that way, I got to discover more of beautiful Cambridge and the surrounding areas). Thank you for opening your home to me!

Volunteering here was really rewarding. Walking dogs helped me discover the stunning landscape, also visiting Cambridge was very easy. Charlie and Joanna were excellent hosts, making me feel at home. I also learned a lot about British culture from them. Thanks to their hospitality, the beautiful surroundings, and my time in Cambridge, this experience became truly unforgettable.

Volunteering in Longmeadow had been one of the most intesting experiences of my life. Joanna is such a nice person, her cooking skills are awesome and she makes sure everybody is feeling great. Charlie is also a great person, funny and outgoing. The dogs were very nice and I could definately improve my english skills and connect with nature. I'll love to go to Longmeadow again soon!!!
