Refit & Adventure Crew – Join SV Windfall
Hello, my name is Thomas, captain and owner of the sailing vessel Windfall.
After a major refit that started in 2023, Windfall is now entering the final stage of preparation before setting sail on a long offshore adventure around the world. For the coming months, I’m looking for one motivated person who would like to join the project and live aboard for a longer period.
From May through July, we will focus on finishing the last jobs needed to make the boat fully ready for offshore sailing. The work includes a variety of practical tasks such as maintenance, painting, carpentry, mechanical work, rigging, electrical work, and general boat preparation.
You don’t need sailing experience, but I am looking for someone who enjoys working with their hands and has useful practical skills. For example:
Mechanical knowledge
Electrical skills
Carpentry or general maintenance
Being an all-round handy person
If you already have sailing experience, that’s a plus — but it’s definitely not required.
Living and working together on a boat is a special experience. You’ll learn a lot about sailing, boat systems, and life at sea while being part of preparing a vessel for a serious ocean voyage.
If the collaboration feels right for both of us, there is also the possibility to continue sailing with Windfall from August, when the first leg of the journey will begin — heading south towards the Canary Islands and beyond.
This is a unique chance to become part of a real expedition project and possibly earn a more permanent place aboard Windfall for future adventures.
If you are practical, motivated, adventurous, and excited about life on a sailing vessel, I’d love to hear from you.
Thomas
Activities & Shift
May – July | Final Refit Stage
During these months we will focus on the final stage of Windfall’s refit. Most of the heavy work has already been completed, but there are still important finishing jobs to finish before the boat is ready for offshore sailing.
This period is mainly about practical maintenance work and preparing the boat for long ocean passages. Because of the nature of the project, I am primarily looking for someone who already has some practical maintenance skills and enjoys working with their hands. This could be mechanical work, electrical knowledge, carpentry, or being an all-round handy person.
Typical work during this period includes:
Final deck painting and finishing work
Installing and testing onboard systems (water systems, electrical systems, navigation equipment)
Engine checks and mechanical work
reinstalling instruments and electronics
Rigging inspection and adjustments
Living and working aboard Windfall during this time means being part of a real preparation for an ocean voyage. It’s hands-on work and requires motivation and responsibility. This opportunity is therefore best suited for people who genuinely enjoy maintenance projects and technical work, rather than travelers mainly looking for short-term accommodation.
Late July – Early August | Sea Trials
At the end of July we will begin sea trials to test the boat under real sailing conditions. During this period we will take Windfall out for several test sails to make sure everything is functioning properly.
Activities during this phase include:
Testing the rig and sails
Checking navigation and electronic systems
Identifying and solving small issues that appear after sailing
Final inspection of the underwater hull and systems
This is a combination of sailing, troubleshooting
