Program Details
PLH Sanuki is a community center inside a renovated elementary school in rural Kagawa, Japan, a few minutes from the Seto Inland Sea. The old classrooms are now a co-working space, an English cafe, an art and craft room, a gym, and an event hall. Every week the building fills up with local kids, adults learning English, elderly neighbours joining English sessions, and events. If you are on a Work Holiday Visa you are staff here, with a role and a schedule. You live in our staff housing a short distance from the school. We will go through every actual figure with you on a video call. On a tourist visa, we host you as a cultural exchange volunteer, not a job, with no hours or duties. Please state your visa type when you apply.
Activities & Shift
Teaching is the core of the week. You lead and co-teach after-school classes for kids, small-group and one-to-one conversation lessons, EIKEN exam preparation, and adult evening classes. Every week we also run English events: game nights, conversation cafes, movie nights and study hours. They are relaxed, they are genuinely fun, and they are how you get to know the town.
We are an AI-driven company and it makes the job easier. We use AI to help build lesson plans and materials and to run the booking and calendar systems, so you spend less time on prep and admin and more time actually teaching.
Cooking is part of this role and it is working time like any other. The kitchen serves lunch and dinner, the shifts are split across the staff team and named on the rota, and your kitchen hours are recorded. It is not a favour and it is not extra.
Alongside that you help the site run: setting up and packing down events, welcoming visitors, photos and social media, and the general work of keeping a big old building going. Quiet weeks are steady and calm. Camp weeks and event weeks are busy and very social. You will know the neighbourhood quickly, because the neighbourhood comes to us.
Rules
You must already hold a working holiday visa for Japan if you are applying for the staff position. We cannot sponsor a visa.
We host tourist-visa travellers on a separate cultural exchange volunteer opportunity, which we will discuss in the interview. Fluent English is highly preferred. Japanese at any level is a bonus. Travel insurance for your stay is required. Cooking, cleaning, and event setup are part of the role alongside teaching.
Basic physical ability is required: standing, cleaning, light lifting. Respect for local culture, community members and shared spaces is essential, and safety instructions are followed at all times. No alcohol during working hours. Bring initiative. If you see a problem, fix it or tell someone.
