Activities & Shift

🐢 1️⃣ Sea Turtle Nesting Monitoring (March–November)
Work along a 5 km protected beach monitoring nesting:
🐢 Leatherback turtles (March–June)
🐢 Green sea turtles (July–November)

🌙 Night Patrols
Search for nesting turtles along the beach
Take morphometric measurements
Tag individuals for identification
Relocate vulnerable nests to safer areas
Walk up to 10 km on soft sand under demanding tropical conditions
Patrols last at least 4 hours
This is physically demanding but deeply rewarding work.

🌅 Morning Census (5:00 AM)
Count nests laid during the night
Monitor relocated nests
Excavate hatched nests to calculate hatching success
Contribute to population data and conservation metrics

🐢 2️⃣ Freshwater Turtle Monitoring
Install and check aquatic capture traps
Assist in radio telemetry tracking
Help researchers better understand turtle ecology and movement patterns

🌿 3️⃣ Terrestrial Fauna Monitoring (Rainforest)
Install and maintain camera traps across 20+ km of rainforest trails
Conduct maintenance every two weeks
Review and identify wildlife footage with research leaders
Monitor mammal populations and biodiversity health

🌍 Environmental Education
Volunteers also support community outreach and environmental education activities in the local village — helping strengthen conservation awareness beyond the forest and beach.

⏰ Schedule & Field Reality
Most activities begin between 4:00–5:00 AM
Night patrols are essential during turtle season
Some sunset activities include checking traps and camera stations
Expect humidity, rain, mud, insects, long walks, and raw nature
This is not luxury volunteering — it’s real field biology.

Rules

All participants must be in good physical health. Please be aware you are volunteering to participate in strenuous physical activities – including walking up to 10 miles (16 km) per day on soft, uneven sand while carrying an 11-pound (5-kg) backpack – under demanding conditions (heat, humidity, darkness, biting insects) at a remote location. These activities are not recommended for individuals with heart conditions, limited mobility, or poor night vision. Discuss your participation with your doctor if you have a question or concern about your ability to participate.
