Program Details
The Livelihood Project is a core initiative of the Alliance for African Women Initiative (AFAWI) designed to empower women in Ghana through a combination of microfinance, financial literacy, and essential business training.
Project Structure & Volunteer Involvement
Volunteers typically work as part of the NGO’s team in Accra, split between office-based planning and fieldwork in rural or peri-urban communities like Abokobi, Boi, and Afienya. The project follows three distinct phases where volunteers can contribute:
Phase 1: Training & Workshops: Women must complete workshops before receiving financial aid. Volunteers assist in preparing and conducting sessions on:
Business Skills: Bookkeeping, marketing, and management.
Health & Gender: Topics include family planning, nutrition, and personal health, which are crucial for maintaining work consistency.
Phase 2: Small Support Credit: After training, women receive small, low-interest loans (or grants in specific cases) to start or expand businesses like food vending, tailoring, or farming. Volunteers help with needs assessments, monitoring progress, and evaluating the impact of these loans.
Phase 3: Savings Program ("Susu"): To ensure long-term sustainability, AFAWI provides daily savings accounts where staff (and sometimes volunteers) collect small amounts from women at their workplaces to encourage future financial security.
Activities & Shift
Volunteers in the AFAWI Livelihood Project engage in a mixture of office-based coordination and direct community fieldwork. The schedule typically runs Monday to Thursday, 09:00 to 16:00.
Field-Based Activities
Volunteers travel to rural or peri-urban communities (like Abokobi or Afienya) to work directly with women entrepreneurs.
Workshop Facilitation: Assisting staff in conducting training sessions on business skills, bookkeeping, financial literacy, and health/family planning.
Business Monitoring: Visiting existing beneficiaries at their workplaces to evaluate the growth of their businesses and the impact of the loans provided.
Needs Assessments: Participating in the screening and identification of new potential beneficiaries to determine their eligibility for future micro-credit phases.
Financial Collection: Helping staff with the manual collection of daily savings ("Susu") or loan repayments at the homes or workplaces of the women.
Office-Based Activities
When not in the field, volunteers work from the AFAWI office in Accra on the conceptual and administrative side of the NGO.
Project Planning: Designing the next phases of the project and conceptualizing new initiatives.
Fundraising & Marketing: Writing fundraising proposals and managing social media or marketing content to raise the project's profile.
Data & Research: Engaging in data collection, evaluation of project results, and background research for academic publications.
Administrative Support: Assisting with NGO management tasks and preparing for partner meetings or conferences.
Cultural and Extra-Curricular Activities
AFAWI integrates cultural exchange into the volunteer experience.
Internal Training: Attending Twi language lessons, cultural dancing, and drumming classes organized for volunteers
