Program Details
Our volunteer project at Albergue y Restaurante El Jardín was born from the idea of sharing the day-to-day life of a hostel on the Camino de Santiago from within, being part of a family project with years of experience in hosting pilgrims. We are looking for people who want to live an authentic experience in a rural, peaceful and multicultural environment, where travelers from different parts of the world arrive every day.
Volunteering is based on collaborating in the daily tasks of the hostel and the restaurant, mainly in two areas: cleaning and kitchen support. In the mornings, the daily maintenance cleaning of the hostel (rooms, bathrooms and common areas) is carried out so that everything is prepared before opening to pilgrims at 13:00. These tasks usually take about two hours, depending on occupancy and work pace.
In the afternoons, volunteers can collaborate in the restaurant, helping in the preparation of the pilgrim's menu, basic cooking tasks, dish collection, washing of dishes and general support during dinner service, which begins at 19:00.
More than a strictly work exchange, we understand volunteering as an experience of living together, learning and collaboration.
In exchange for this collaboration, we offer a real experience inside a Camino de Santiago hostel, the opportunity to learn about hospitality and hostel management, live with people from different cultures and be part for a while of a project carried out with care and dedication. We are looking for responsible and committed people who want to contribute, and in return they will find a family environment where their help is valued and where they can live a unique experience.
Activities & Shift
Volunteers will collaborate in the day-to-day life of the Albergue and El Jardín Restaurant, mainly in two areas: hostel maintenance and kitchen support, forming part of the space's everyday operation and helping pilgrims find a clean, welcoming and well-kept place.
In the hostel, tasks will consist of carrying out the daily maintenance cleaning: rooms, bathrooms, common rooms and other shared areas, in addition to small tidying and organizing tasks. This shift takes place in the morning, since the hostel opens to pilgrims at 13:00, so the cleaning must be finished around 12:30. Normally these tasks take around two hours, depending on the pace and occupancy of the day.
In the restaurant, volunteers will collaborate as kitchen support, helping in the preparation of the pilgrim's menu, basic cooking tasks, dish collection, dishwashing and organization of the workspace. The main shift will be in the afternoon, since the pilgrim's dinner begins at 19:00, so the tasks focus on prior preparation and support during that service. In some cases there could also be support during the midday shift, depending on the needs of the day.
This is a dynamic, team-based collaboration where every person contributes to make the hostel and restaurant operate in the best possible way.
Rules
More than strict rules, in our project we believe in common sense, respect and mutual commitment. This volunteering is based on trust and on the desire to build together a good experience for both those who come and those who are part of the hostel.
We are looking for responsible, hardworking, respectful and committed people, who come with a true intention to get involved, collaborate and contribute to the day-to-day of the project. The functioning of the hostel and the restaurant depends on teamwork, so we particularly value positive attitude, initiative and respect for others.
On our part, we will put everything in our power so that those who come can learn, develop personally and professionally and live an enriching experience, in a rural and multicultural environment, in contact with pilgrims from all over the world.
We want it to be a beautiful and enriching experience for everyone, where the effort and dedication of each person are reflected and rewarded within the project.
