Program Details

Depending on the time of the year, the kitchen rhythm can change. What doesn't change is that our kitchen is like a home kitchen, just much bigger. The volunteer will be part of the kitchen circle, as part of the team that helps manage food and the daily flow of the kitchen. This can include simple meal prep, organizing ingredients, helping cook for the house, taking care of all the fermentations and preservations (kombucha, etc) and keeping the kitchen clean and enjoyable for everyone.
Volunteers usually spend about 20 hours a week contributing. The kitchen is also a place of creativity and connection. If someone enjoys experimenting with recipes, baking, fermenting, or sharing dishes from their culture, we encourage that. The kitchen is less about responsibility and more about sharing food, learning, and creating together.
At Protopia, we also love when volunteers bring their own ideas and passions into the space. If you’re someone who genuinely enjoys being in the kitchen and cooking for others, you’ll probably feel very at home here.

Activities & Shift

In case there ie also host events as a financial sustainability mechanism. So volunteers, when there is an event, they are part of the Protopia team and support the event, and also take part free on the event. When there isn't an event, we still are a lot of people in Protopia. Usually 10 people is the minimum. Some come to volunteer, some come as digital nomads, some are 6 months apprentices, that are learning the whole in's and out's of building, maintaining and financing a eco-village, regenerative farm and retreat center. We go on trips every weekend—volcano hikes, national parks, hot springs etc.

Rules

Consent is one of the most important rules in Protopia, and there is zero tolerance for those who don't respect it. We put a lot of effort to make sure our space is psychologically and physically safe for all, and especially women (more detailed in the welcome letter). 9pm-7am are quite rooms in the sleeping areas. We are an ecological community, so try to bring biodegradable toiletries. Tabacco smoking, if it's a must, only in designated areas. Drinking in a very rare occasions, and usually collectively organized. Protopia is not a place that has a strict rule system. But we respect the local community, we respect each other, and general kind behavior is expected. However, we also encourage everyone to be themselves, and we work actively, as a community, to solve problems by understanding them and growing beyond. We'll send a orientation pdf after you reach out.
