Makuyu Education Initiative is a children’s home located in rural Makuyu, Kenya. The home currently has 15 children living there and we have 7 employees working full time, including 5 who live at the children’s home. The children ages range from 6 to 13. All of them were living in abject poverty before we took them in, including going for days without a meal, sleeping on the ground, and not going to school were common occurrences for the children. The mission of the Makuyu Education Initiave is to provide underprivileged children with an opportunity to escape the vicious cycle of poverty by providing the children with a safe place to live and learn so that they can reach their full potential.
Volunteers are needed for a variety of different reasons. For example, we need volunteers to help take care of the children, which includes helping with cooking, cleaning, washing laundry, and with teaching classes, as well as to take pictures/videos of the children, introducing them to different culture around the world, and working with organizational staff on new ideas.
