Second time volunteering! I had a great time at the hostel both times. Work is fun and you are able to interact with hostel guests from all over the world. Both groups of volunteers I was with were incredible and made the experience a blast. As mentioned in my last review Jonathan and the hostel staff are super supportive and welcoming. And previous concerns about the accommodation were improved. Thank you again for the wonderful experience!

This was my first volunteer experience, and it was incredible. The work is fun at times and allows you to connect with guests from all over the world. I was lucky enough to share with a great group of volunteers from different countries, learn from them and practice theirs languages. Jonatan and the staff members were very kind and attentive. The accommodation, although is really close to the hostel, is too small for eight people. Overall, I highly recommend this experience. Thanks everyone for this month, I was very happy :)

The hostel Lover's was my first volunteer experience which might give me a mixed view on things. The hostel itself was great and the staff were easy to work with. Jonathan himself was an amazing host and things definitely ran smoother when he was there. Definitely recommend speaking Portuguese or Spanish since the restaurant staff doesn't know English. The apartment was filthy due to prior volunteers and people refusing to clean as they left. Cleaning supplies are provided when asked but I would recommend going in the busy season since September was quite dead.

If you're a type B person who enjoys partying and doesn't mind chaos or basic conditions, this volunteering experience might suit you. However, my friend and I only stayed one night because the accommodation did not match the photos. We had agreed beforehand to share a bed, but it turned out to be a top bunk in a small, messy room. Despite this, Jonathan tried to help us, and the other volunteers were very kind. The social atmosphere is great, but the volunteers' accommodation definitely needs improvement:)

Jonathan is a friendly host, the location is great, and it's a social hostel. The work can be demanding and it was sometimes a little strict. I personally enjoyed the work, but it does depend on the person.
My main problem was the housing. When I arrived, there was no AC or Wi-Fi, the door was broken, there were no drawers for storage, and the space was quite dirty and messy. Some issues were addressed during my stay, and Jonathan was responsive and kind.
Overall, I enjoyed my time there, but I would recommend checking in on the up to date housing conditions when confirming your stay

Thank you for your kind review :) Regarding the house as it seems to be the biggest concern of our volunteers, the first days of your arrival we did install an AC and wifi for the comfort of our volunteers.
Regarding the cleaning situation this is purely the responsibility of the volunteers staying on the house, all the volunteers coming are adults and should manage themselves the cleaning of their own house. Hope you understand :) Thank you!! Jonathan

Overall, I had a good experience at Sun Lovers. Speaking Portuguese is a big advantage, while most hostel guests speak English many locals and one of the co-owners only speak Portuguese. And expectations around work are very high. The volunteer house is well located but small, with no Wi-Fi, drinkable water, or AC. The staff at the hostel are very welcoming, and Jonathan is supportive and genuinely cares about the volunteers.

Hi my dear Felicity :) Thank you for being with us for a month and maybe joining us again this summer of 2026. We had in the meantime some upgrades on the volunteer house as it seemed to need a little attention. Wifi now works perfectly and also we installed a portable AC machine to keep the house fresh for the summer nights :) As for Drinkable water, you can find it on the hostel about 1 minute walking from the volunteering house :)

Be prepared to work hard. The experience felt somewhat chaotic at times, which is understandable as they only started hosting volunteers this year. On the positive side, the host listens to volunteers' concerns and genuinely tries to help. The volunteers accommodation is about a 4minute walk away and currently has no WiFi or drinking water available. Expectations regarding work can be quite high. Also, if any payments or tips are offered, it's worth clarifying the process in advance, especially if you plan to leave the city. They are still learning how to manage a volunteer program be prepared

My experience as a volunteer at the hostel was positive. I learned many new things and had the opportunity to develop new skills. The people who work there were always kind, patient, and were willing to help me when I needed it. They also respected my work hours and, in general, I had a good experience with the tasks and responsibilities assigned. As for an aspect to improve, I think the volunteers' house could be better equipped and have some additional amenities. I appreciate the opportunity and I recommend this experience.
