Program Details
Ocean Gardener is an active conservation organisation. This volunteer programme is not a tourism experience, and it is not designed for casual participation. The work you will be involved in is real coral restoration carried out within an active coral lab, nursery, and restoration site, and it requires commitment, responsibility, and a strong work ethic. You will be surrounded and guided by real Marine Biologists with multiple years of experience in this field, who are currently conducting scientific research. Throughout the programme, you will be expected to take part fully in both training and practical activities. Tasks can be physically and mentally demanding and require focus, patience, and attention to detail, particularly when working underwater around fragile coral structures. Conditions are not always predictable, and flexibility is an important part of working in a real conservation environment. This programme is best suited to individuals who are genuinely passionate about marine conservation and who are motivated to contribute meaningfully to long-term reef restoration efforts. We value volunteers who are proactive, resilient, willing to learn, and able to work as part of a team. A positive attitude and a readiness to engage fully with the work are essential. By joining this programme, you are becoming part of a professional conservation effort. The standards we set are designed to protect our reefs, ensure safety, and support the long-term success of our restoration work.
Those who commit fully will gain valuable hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of what effective coral restoration involves.
Activities & Shift
The Coral Restoration Volunteer Programme runs Monday to Friday and follows a structured weekly schedule that combines classroom-based learning, in-water training, and practical restoration work. Classroom-based sessions will be held in our Coral Lab, in Ped. All in-water training and restoration activities will be conducted as shore or boat dives along the North coastline of Nusa Penida. Weekends are generally free, allowing time for rest, personal activities, and exploring the surrounding area. Each week of the programme has a specific focus, building progressively from foundational knowledge to hands-on restoration and monitoring. Training sessions are delivered by Ocean Gardener instructors and are directly linked to the practical work carried out at the coral nursery and restoration site. While the exact daily schedule may vary depending on weather and site conditions, the overall weekly structure outlined below provides a clear overview of how the programme is organised.
Rules
Please note that this programme involves working in an active marine environment and requires a good level of physical fitness and confidence in the water. You will be responsible for handling and using dive equipment, as well as assisting with tasks such as carrying gear, entering and exiting the water, and working around coral structures. For this reason, we place strong emphasis on:
- Good physical condition
- Strong buoyancy control
- Comfort and confidence underwater
These standards are in place to ensure both your safety and the protection of the coral reefs we are restoring.
