Program Details
The Conscious Castle is a living retreat center and community in the making. Many different people move through the space: volunteers, retreat participants, facilitators, chefs, guests and community members.
Your role is to help make daily life clearer and easier for everyone:
You will observe how the castle currently works, identify missing or confusing information, and turn it into simple, visual systems that people can actually follow.
This may include creating manuals, checklists, schedules, labels and step-by-step guides for:
* Volunteers and community members
* Retreat guests
* Facilitators and organizers
* Chefs using the kitchen
* Cleaning and preparing bedrooms
* Maintaining the Tower Temple and shared rooms
* Using the kitchen, sauna, hot tub, firepit and rowing boat
* Caring for communal bathrooms, toilets and outdoor spaces
This is not only a desk-based role. You will also organize, clean and test the spaces yourself so that the systems you create are realistic, useful and connected to everyday life.
If you enjoy bringing structure to creative environments, notice details and feel genuine satisfaction when information and spaces become easier to understand, this role may be for you.
Activities & Shift
🌀 Systems and procedures
Observe current routines and help define clear expectations, responsibilities and standards for different groups using the castle.
✍️ Visual guides and manuals
Create simple how-to guides using clear language, photographs, diagrams, checklists and step-by-step instructions.
🗂️ Digital organization
Work with Google Docs, spreadsheets, calendars, task lists, Canva, Notion or similar tools to organize information and planning.
🏰 Practical implementation
Organize cupboards, supplies, rooms and shared spaces; test the procedures yourself; and improve them based on what works in real life.
🧹 Community care
Support cleaning, organizing and preparing spaces when needed. This role is about creating systems and participating in them.
👨🍳 As part of your role, you will help us map and document our house recipes and production processes (like lemonades, jams, or infused oils). To do this effectively, you should have a foundation in basic cooking techniques and food safety standards. You will observe the preparation process, break it down step-by-step, and create clear, visual guides and hygiene protocols so anyone in the community can follow them safely and consistently.
⏰ Flexible rhythm
Around 20 hours per week, usually four hours per day with two days off. Your schedule can be organized with flexibility in coordination with Joyce and the current needs of the castle. We also hold a 30-minute morning meeting to stay aligned with the team and coordinate the day’s schedule (not included in the 20 hours).
Rules
The Conscious Castle is a substance-free home (with zero tolerance, outside specific ceremonial contexts). Smoking in any form, alcohol and recreational or hard drugs are not allowed during everyday community life.
We also ask you to:
• Respect the people, land, shared spaces and personal belongings
• Communicate openly when you need support or something feels unclear
• Complete agreed responsibilities with care and reliability
• Join shared lunches and dinners when you are at home. We value these moments of connection while respecting the occasional need for rest or personal space.
• Participate in small community-care tasks
• Respect the privacy and boundaries of retreat participants
• Ask before inviting visitors or using unfamiliar equipment
Serious breaches of safety, trust or substance-related agreements may result in the stay ending early.
