Program Details
We are looking to host volunteers who have an interest in small-scale, diversified organic farming. If you get excited about food - growing it, harvesting it, preserving it, cooking it (and especially eating it), then we would love to meet you.
We grow almost all the food we eat for year-round eating, but I need a little extra help now that I have two very small daughters. We are hoping to find someone who will help us fill the pantries and the freezers - from seed to harvest. We also hope this person (or people) will enjoy a balance of outdoor and indoor work. All of the 'field work' has less glamorous indoor components (mostly involving cleaning), and sometimes I really need a hand making peace in the farmhouse after a busy day outside.
I enjoy working alongside people and getting to know them, but sometimes I will be tending our girls and volunteers will be working alone.
Activities & Shift
The day will begin around 8:30 a.m. Cream will be skimmed, and the kitchen will be prepared for the day's culinary activities, which might include: butter/yogurt/cheesemaking, canning, blanching/freezing, flour milling, oat rolling, and general meal prep.
The volunteer will assist with the dairy chores before heading to the garden or greenhouse. Farm lunch to follow! The afternoon may be spent in the garden or in the farm kitchen, preserving the bounty of the day's harvest. Supper may be eaten with us or ingredients may be sent home with the volunteer.
Rules
This farm is where our family lives, works, and dreams. We are raising our children here and building our livelihood here. As a guest at our farm, please show care and respect for the people and the place. Let the mark you leave be one of beauty and thoughtfulness. This experience is a small window into our life; the intimacy of sharing daily routines in our home should be regarded with care, open mindedness, and a degree of tenderness toward the chaos of two small children. We certainly recognize the value of your time and are so happy you are interested in giving some of your time to us.
