Program Details

Volunteers have their own dedicated space in a large static caravan with kitchen, with an additional caravan for private space for a second helper. On the farm the central requirement is cleaning and changing over the 4 tourist BnB's, which happens 1 or 2 times a week each, in peak season.
Other projects which are current in development is a off-grid hydro electric build, which volunteers would be welcome to learn and help. There is also occasional helping with cow movement around the farm, and fencing (with posts and gates, not swords). One of the main people on the farm is Jane, who is an fun elderly lady who has got to an age where she occasionally needs help with driving (at night) and cleaning, so volunteers who have caring characters as well as practical skills would be optimal. Other ongoing tasks are the management of the organic vegetable garden and polytunnel, apple, plum and berry picking and preserving in the summer and meal preparation, breadmaking and keeping the kitchen and farmhouse tidy. There are two rivers on the farm which sometimes produce fish, and there is a boat on the loch which in the summer is used for fun days out, catching mackerel and lobster potting. We also have an outdoor pizza oven, which is used in sunny weather. It is also important that applicants have a valid driving licence, be able to drive manual transmission and be over 25 years old for farm vehicle insurance.

Activities & Shift

The B&B changeovers are normally after 10am (checkout time) and take 2 or 3 hours, depending on property and tidiness. In all but 1 cottage the sheets are washed by a local company in Ullapool, so sheets need to be dropped off/collected twice a week. There would normally be around 4 to 7 changeovers a week in total. Managing the garden is one hour a day three times a week. helping with cow movement is about once every 2 months, and farm maintenance/ hydro project work is generally done on a day without B&B changeovers, several times a week. Other daily tasks are communal cooking, occasionally driving Jane in the evening and keeping the kitchen clean and tidy.
