Program Details

At Casa Cumari da Canastra in São Roque de Minas, we have a patch of land that we want to transform into a more beautiful, vibrant, and well-kept garden, with a vegetable garden, ornamental plants, herbs, flowers and more organized areas to welcome visitors.

The role is to help care for and renovate this outdoor space. The volunteer will be able to contribute to cleaning the yard, removing grass, organizing the beds, pruning plants, preparing the soil, and planting new species.

It's an opportunity for those who enjoy working with their hands, getting their hands dirty in the soil, caring for plants, and helping to create a space that's more welcoming, beautiful, and integrated into the Serra da Canastra landscape.

No specialist experience is required, but it's important to be willing to engage in manual tasks, handle tools with care, pay attention to the plants, and have a desire to learn. People with experience in gardening, vegetable gardening, agroecology, landscaping, pruning, or composting are very welcome.

Activities & Shift

The main activities will focus on caring for the garden, the kitchen garden, and the yard at Casa Cumari.

The volunteer will be able to help with:

remove grass and invasive plants from the beds and bare soil areas;
clean and organize the yard;
prepare the soil for new plantings;
plant seedlings, flowers, herbs, vegetables, and other plants;
prune existing plants;
organize the beds and circulation spaces;
water the plants and monitor the development of the garden;
help brainstorm simple improvements for the garden;
separate leaves, branches and organic waste for composting or proper disposal;
keep tools clean and stored after use.

Shifts will be arranged in an organized manner, preferably during the cooler hours of the day, such as morning or late afternoon. Some activities may vary depending on the weather, space needs and the week's plan.

Rules

We are looking for a responsible, careful person who is willing to contribute to improving the external space of Casa Cumari.

It is important:

to keep to the agreed schedule;
to handle gardening tools with care;
to keep tools and materials organized after use;
to respect the plants, animals, the house, and the people who use the space;
to avoid water waste during watering;
to raise any questions before pruning, pulling up, or removing a plant;
to keep the yard clean and safe during activities;
to wear closed-toe shoes and appropriate clothing for soil work;
to be willing to engage in light to moderate physical activity;
to act with autonomy, but always align major decisions with the Casa Cumari team.

The experience is ideal for those who want to spend a few days in Serra da Canastra, put their hands in the soil, learn from the plants, and help transform a yard into a space that's more beautiful, productive and welcoming.
