Pioneer Our New Arts and Crafts Center in a Beautiful Indonesian Village
About the Program
We are opening the doors to our brand-new Traditional Indonesian Arts and Crafts Center in just 2 to 4 weeks. Located in the same vibrant village as our existing farm, this center is dedicated to preserving local heritage, empowering regional artisans, and creating an interactive space for cultural exchange.
Because we are in the launch phase, this is not a routine volunteer gig. You will be a founding collaborator, helping us transform a blank canvas into a living, breathing cultural hub.
Weekly Tasks and Responsibilities
We expect around 20 to 25 hours of help per week, usually 4 to 5 hours a day with 3 days off. Your tasks will shift as we move from pre-opening setup to our official launch.
Phase 1: The Build-Up (Weeks 1 to 3)
* Space Curation: Painting murals, setting up gallery displays, and organizing workshop stations for local crafts like weaving, pottery, or carving.
* Creative Input: Brainstorming signage, creating welcoming decor, and helping design the layout for visitors.
* Digital Storytelling: Documenting the behind-the-scenes journey through photos and short-form video to build anticipation.
Phase 2: The Grand Opening and Beyond (Weeks 4+)
* Event Support: Helping us host opening events, welcoming community members, and managing guest logistics.
* Artisan Assistance: Supporting local masters during workshops, helping translate or bridge communication gaps for foreign visitors.
* Daily Flow: Keeping the creative spaces organized, inspired, and running smoothly.
What We Look For
We do not just need extra hands; we need energy and passion. You are a great fit if you are:
* A Creative or Maker: An artist, designer, photographer, woodworker, or handicraft enthusiast.
* Adaptable and Proactive: Someone who thrives in a startup environment and loves taking initiative when things are still being figured out.
* Culturally Curious: Eager to learn traditional Indonesian techniques and respect local village customs.
Accommodation and Perks
* Stay: Comfortable bed in our volunteer house, with shared or private options depending on availability.
* Meals: Delicious, locally sourced Indonesian meals provided daily.
* The Environment: You get the best of both worlds, the creative buzz of the new arts center and access to the peaceful nature of our nearby farm.
* Cultural Immersion: Free access to learn directly from master artisans and a deep, authentic connection to Indonesian village life.
Requirements
* Minimum Stay: 2 weeks to ensure you see the project through its opening milestone.
* Language: Conversational English. Basic Indonesian is a lovely bonus but not required.
Activities & Shift
Schedule and Shifts
We ask for 20 to 25 hours of help per week. This is typically split into 4 to 5 hours of volunteering per day, 4 days a week, giving you 3 full days off to explore the village, relax at our nearby farm, or travel.
Your shifts will generally run during the day, for example from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM or 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM, depending on the daily heat and our project needs. We believe in flexibility, so we will plan the weekly schedule together as a team.
Daily Activities
Because we are opening the center from scratch, your activities will evolve over time.
Before the Opening (Weeks 1 to 3)
* Morning Circle: We start the day with a quick meeting over coffee or tea to discuss the day's goals and divide tasks.
* Creative Setup: You will spend your shift painting walls, creating signs, setting up display shelves, and arranging workshop spaces for the local crafts.
* Media Capture: Taking photos and videos of the transformation process to share updates with our community.
* Village Integration: Visiting local artisans with us to collect materials and plan upcoming workshops.
After the Grand Opening (Weeks 4 and Beyond)
* Welcoming Guests: Greeting visitors, offering them a tour of the space, and explaining the center's mission.
* Workshop Assistance: Helping traditional Indonesian craft masters set up their tools, organize materials, and assist international guests who might need help with translation or basic instructions.
* Center Upkeep: Spending a bit of time each day ensuring the exhibition areas and workshop tables stay clean, organized, and inviting.
* Cultural Exchange: Participating in evening community gatherings, sharing stories, and learning traditional arts directly from the masters after the formal shifts end.
Rules
House Rules and Guidelines
To ensure a great community vibe and a successful center launch, we ask all volunteers to respect these simple rules.
Cultural Respect and Etiquette
* Dress Modestly: Cover shoulders and knees when walking through the village and working at the center.
* Respect Local Customs: Be mindful of village traditions, quiet hours, and neighbors.
* No Shoes Inside: Remove your footwear before entering indoor living spaces and designated areas at the center.
Community Living
* Cleanliness: Keep shared spaces clean. Wash your own dishes immediately and help with group cleanups.
* Quiet Hours: Keep noise to a minimum from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM so everyone can rest.
* Save Resources: Turn off lights and fans when leaving a room, and use water mindfully.
* No Overnight Guests: Outside guests are welcome at the center, but not in the volunteer house.
Project Expectations
* Punctuality: Show up on time for your shifts and morning meetings.
* Communication: Be flexible and talk to us directly if you are unwell or need support.
* Tool Care: Clean and return all art supplies and tools to their proper places after use.
