The Feast and Order Warden: Housekeeping & Community Cooking
The experience
Welcome to the Conscious Castle! We are a small, but vibrant community located just outside the quaint village of Verlaine. Our chief value is consciousness— This ranges from being mindful of small actions and how they impact the community, to how our mindset impacts our moment-to-moment life. When you join this tribe, you are not here just to work, but to immerse yourself in a rich cultural exchange and become a vital part of daily life here.

Program Details
Your contribution helps create the calm, clean and welcoming environment that allows daily life, retreats and community experiences to unfold.
You will care for the castle and farm through housekeeping, preparing spaces and cooking three communal meals per week. The role involves around 20 hours of help each week, usually divided into four hours per day with two days off.
Your schedule can be flexible and will be coordinated with the team according to the rhythm of the house and upcoming retreats.
Outside your volunteer hours, you can rest, work remotely, explore the countryside and take part in shared moments such as meals, conversations, movie nights, games or sauna sessions when they naturally happen.
Activities & Shift
🧹 Housekeeping
Clean and prepare bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, sauna, temple, shared rooms, windows, hallways, hidden corners and general areas.
🍳 Community cooking
Prepare three nourishing communal meals per week, taking into account the dietary needs of the people staying with us.
🏰 Retreat preparation
Help prepare bedrooms and shared spaces before retreats and restore them afterwards.
⏰ Flexible rhythm
Around 20 hours per week, usually four hours per day with two days off. You can organize your hours with some flexibility, in coordination with Joyce and the needs of the house.
We also hold a 30-minute morning meeting to stay aligned with the team and coordinate the day’s schedule (not included in the 20 hours).
Rules
The Conscious Castle is a substance-free home (with zero tolerance, outside specific ceremonial contexts). Smoking in any form, alcohol and recreational or hard drugs are not allowed during everyday community life.
We also ask you to:
• Respect the people, land, shared spaces and personal belongings
• Communicate openly when you need support or something feels unclear
• Complete agreed responsibilities with care and reliability
• Join shared lunches and dinners when you are at home. We value these moments of connection while respecting the occasional need for rest or personal space.
• Participate in small community-care tasks
• Respect the privacy and boundaries of retreat participants
• Ask before inviting visitors or using unfamiliar equipment
Serious breaches of safety, trust or substance-related agreements may result in the stay ending early.
