Program Details

You will join our local team in the mountain town of Abetifi, supporting community-led reforestation and small-scale farming activities.

The program combines practical environmental work with support for local farmers. Depending on the season and current priorities, volunteers may help care for tree seedlings, prepare planting areas, plant native trees, maintain previously planted sites and assist farmers with physically demanding tasks. Priority support may be given to older farmers and community members who need additional help.

You will receive an orientation, guidance from the local team and ongoing support throughout your stay. Activities depend heavily on rainfall, planting seasons and the immediate needs of the community, so flexibility is important.

Activities & Shift

Volunteers usually help Monday to Friday for around 25 hours per week, with two days off.

Activities may include:

Caring for seedlings in the tree nursery
Watering, weeding and preparing growing areas
Planting native trees when seasonal conditions are suitable
Maintaining and monitoring previously planted trees
Clearing and preparing land using basic hand tools
Supporting local farmers with planting, harvesting and general farm work
Helping older farmers with practical tasks
Assisting with environmental education or other suitable community activities

Work normally takes place during the cooler parts of the day where possible. The exact schedule may change due to weather, rainfall, farming seasons and local priorities.

Rules

Please arrive on time, follow the guidance of local staff and farmers, and treat the community and natural environment with respect.

Volunteers must:

Wear suitable clothing and closed footwear for outdoor work
Use tools carefully and only after receiving instructions
Bring drinking water and protect themselves from the sun
Inform staff about any injury, illness or physical limitation
Avoid using chemicals, machinery or unfamiliar equipment without supervision

Help clean and return tools after each activity
Keep the shared volunteer house clean and tidy
Remain flexible when weather or seasonal conditions change the schedule

Volunteers should never complete work they feel is unsafe or beyond their physical ability.
