Medical and Health Internship Program is designed to offer interns the opportunity from around the world to make a meaningful and lasting difference in the lives of underserved communities. Interns on this program work in a variety of healthcare facilities in rural and semi-rural communities of Ghana. This program is suitable for professional, student, or an aspiring healthcare worker and is an excellent opportunity to contribute to rural health.
What you offer
30 hours of help per week

Description:
Volunteers contribute €40 per day to cover food (authentic 3 meals per day), visa support document, pre-departure information pack, accommodation, utilities included, airport pickup, in-country & program orientation, 24/7 in-country supervision & support from staff during your stay in the program, sim card, t-shirt, maintenance, donation to hospital facility, certificate upon project completion & reference letter upon request.

During your program, interns will get the opportunity to help in different departments at the hospitals and clinics as well as encountering different illnesses that you may not necessarily come in contact in your country.

Where will the Elective be done?
SMWEF Ghana places medical and nursing interns in rural and semi-rural communities offering diverse opportunities for qualified professionals, students and aspiring health workers from across the globe in different healthcare facilities across Ghana. The internship placements are mixed together with hospitals and clinics where help is mostly needed throughout the year.
Medical Elective Placements
SMWEF Ghana provides diverse range of placements tailored to the specific needs of students training in the medical field including:
• Dental Electives for dental students looking to gain practical experience in dental departments in hospitals
• Midwifery Electives for students specializing in maternal and newborn care.
Activities & Shift
Volunteers or interns participating in this program will engage in a very impactful and meaningful work experience focused on mental health & psychology in a hospital or clinic setting. Interns begin the day with a wonderful sense of purpose arriving at the hospital or clinic facility, getting ready to contribute to the essential services provided by the facility.
You will immerse yourself within the facilities activities working alongside qualified and experienced supervisors/doctors committed to addressing healthcare challenges. Each intern role is important whether you are directly involved in assisting in therapy sessions, patients support, contributing to awareness, each step is important towards improving healthier.
Interns will have the opportunity make an impact as the day progresses, attending and participating in meetings within the hospital facility, learning about the wonderful aspect of healthcare in underserved communities in developing country.
Shifts & Schedule
Participants participate approximately 4-5 hours per day, 5 days per week depending on the workload available at the hospital or clinic. This volunteer schedule is flexible and may change depending on the activities by the hospital and the community needs such as weather conditions, outreach programs etc.
Weekends are free to explore whether participating in community health outreach programs or engaging in preventive health education while immersing yourself in local communities and their culture. You can also choose to explore the tour attraction sites in Ghana such as a visit to the Cape Coast Castle, Elmina Castle, Kakum National Park, Canopy walkway, Museums, Art Centre, Markola Market, and Independence Square in Accra etc.
Rules
• Participants applying for this program must have medical backgrounds or professionals in this field or alternatively student currently studying medicine.
• Participants encouraged to be flexible, patient, open-minded, respect, abide by the rules of the placement activity, and willing to learn the culture of Ghana.
• Volunteers should communicate openly and respectfully with volunteer coordinators, supervisors etc regarding any challenges, schedule changes, or concerns.
• Any donations or support materials should be coordinated through the organization
• Safety instructions provided by the host organization should always be followed during activities and travel.
