The Exchange: What You Give & What You Get
🌾 What You Give (Your Contribution) We ask for 4 to 5 hours of help per day, 5 days a week (usually Monday to Friday, with weekends off to explore). We want you to enjoy your time here!
Typical Daily Schedule:
• 7:30 AM: Wake up, enjoy a cup of fresh Ugandan tea or coffee with seasonal fruits.
• 8:00 AM - 10:30 AM: Morning farm work (Planting, weeding, watering, or harvesting). We start early to avoid the midday heat!
• 10:30 AM: Long break to rest, shower, and relax.
• 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM: Light afternoon tasks (Making compost, caring for animals, or seed sorting).
• 1:30 PM: A heavy, delicious local lunch.
• Afternoons & Evenings: 100% FREE TIME. Read a book, play cards with the local kids, practice Luganda, or just chill in a hammock. Dinner is served around 7:00 PM.
🌍 What You Get (From Us)
• Accommodation: A clean, private or shared room in our traditional farm house. We provide a comfortable bed with a mosquito net, bedding, and access to a basic bathroom (bucket showers and pit latrines—the real rural African experience!).
• Food: 3 healthy meals a day. Our diet is heavily plant-based, featuring fresh farm greens, beans, peas, rice, posho, potatoes, and tropical fruits (mangoes, papayas, bananas). We happily cater to vegetarians and vegans.
• Drinking Water: Clean, filtered drinking water is provided for free.
🚫 What is NOT Included
• Flights & Visas: You are responsible for your own travel to Uganda and your visa fees (usually $50 USD).
• Travel/Medical Insurance: Worldpackers insurance or equivalent is mandatory.
• Wi-Fi: We are off-the-grid! There is no reliable Wi-Fi on the farm. However, local SIM cards (MTN/Airtel) work well for data, and we will take you to town to buy one when you arrive. We also have a router
Activities & Shift
Activities & Shifts: A Holistic Community Experience
Your Choice: We manage three amazing, interconnected projects. You aren't expected to do everything! During your orientation, we will tailor your schedule based on your skills and what you enjoy most.
🌾 Area 1: Eco Agric Uganda (The Farm & Mushroom House) Perfect for those who love agriculture, sustainability, and unique farming techniques.
• 🍄 Mushroom Cultivation (Our Specialty!): Help us prepare substrates (using coffee husks/straw), inoculate spawn, manage humidity in the mushroom house, and harvest fresh oyster mushrooms.
• Outdoor Farming: Preparing beds, planting, weeding, and harvesting seasonal organic crops.
• Animal Care: Feeding and monitoring our livestock (poultry, goats, etc.).
• Eco-Processing: Making organic compost and natural liquid fertilizers.
📚 Area 2: San Martino Primary School (Education) Perfect for patient, energetic volunteers who love kids and education.
• Classroom Assistance: Helping local teachers with lessons in English, Math, or Basic Science.
• One-on-One Tutoring: Giving extra attention to slower learners to help them catch up.
• Creative Play: Organizing sports, games, music, dance, or art activities during break times.
• School Gardens: Assisting teachers and students with their own school garden projects.
🛠️ Area 3: Bill and Barbra Geyer Rotarians Memorial Vocational Training Center (Skills) Perfect for volunteers with practical trades, business skills, or a passion for youth empowerment.
• Workshop Assistance: Supporting instructors in practical classes like carpentry, tailoring, masonry, or mechanics.
• Agri-Business Mentoring: Teaching the vocational students the business side of what we do—like how to package mushrooms, price them, and sell them for a profit.
Rules
🛑 Our Community Rules
To keep our projects safe, respectful, and running smoothly, we ask all volunteers to follow these guidelines:
🏫 At San Martino Primary: Modest dress is required (knees and shoulders must be covered). No smoking or drinking near the kids. Never take children off-site; always work alongside local teachers.
🍄 At Eco Agric & The Mushroom House: Strict hygiene is mandatory! Wash hands and sanitize shoes before entering to prevent contamination. Closed-toe shoes are required for all outdoor farming.
🛠️ At the Vocational Center: Safety first. Never use carpentry, tailoring, or mechanical tools without explicit permission and supervision from an instructor.
🌍 Cultural Respect: Always greet local staff and elders warmly. Respect local religious and traditional practices. Treat our Ugandan team as equals and experts in their own right.
🍺 Lifestyle: Zero tolerance for illegal drugs (results in immediate expulsion). No heavy drinking on the premises. Quiet hours start at 9:30 PM.
🤝 Daily Life: Be punctual for your shifts. Tell us immediately if you feel sick or overwhelmed so we can adjust your schedule. Keep your phones, money, and passports locked securely in your room.
