The Pre-Physician Assistant Medical Internship program in Ghana with SMWEF is a structured clinical rotation and public health program designed to offer international students seeking hands-on medical exposure, clinical shadow hours, and cultural immersion.
The PA program operates both public and private healthcare facilities and clinics settings, providing essential exposure to international healthcare delivery system.

Description:
Volunteers contribute €850 per week to cover food (3 meals per day), visa support document, pre-departure information, accommodation, utilities included, airport pickup & drop off, administrative support, in-country & program orientation, 24/7 in-country supervision & support from staff, sim card, t-shirt, maintenance, donation to our sanitary pad project, certificate & reference letter upon request.

The PA program operates both public and private healthcare facilities and clinics settings, providing essential exposure to international healthcare delivery system.
SMWEF Ghana Pre-Physician Internship program provides international students with vital clinical hours, direct shadowing, and global health experience to strengthen their PA school applications.
Interns work from Monday to Friday with flexible durations of 5-6 hours a day 30 hours per week depending on the layout schedules at the hospital.
Intern Roles & Responsibilities
SMWEF Ghana unique clinical exposure allows international students to observe physician professional including:
• Conducting examinations, treatment strategies and procedure
• Measuring blood pressure, pulse, temperature and weight under watch
• Diagnosing illness
• Ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests
• Referring patients to specialists
• Assisting with patient preparation, bed setups, and charting
• Shadowing surgeries
• Participating in community health screens, hygiene campaigns, and rural health clinic etc.

Activities & Shift
Interns participating in this program will engage in a very impactful and meaningful work experience focused shadowing doctors and nurses in a hospital or clinic setting. Interns begin the day at 8am with a wonderful sense of purpose arriving at the hospital or clinic facility, getting ready to contribute to the essential services provided by the facility.
You will immerse yourself within the facilities activities working alongside qualified and experienced supervisors/doctors committed to addressing vital health issues. Each intern role is important whether you are directly involved in assisting in therapy sessions, patients support, contributing to awareness, each step is important towards improving healthier
Shifts & Schedule
Participants participate approximately 5-6 hours per day, 5 days per week depending on the workload available at the hospital or clinic. This volunteer schedule is flexible and may change depending on the activities by the hospital and the community needs such as weather conditions, outreach programs etc.
Weekends are free to explore whether participating in community health outreach programs, or engaging in preventive health education while immersing yourself in local communities and their culture. You can also choose to explore the tour attraction sites in Ghana such as a visit to the Cape Coast Castle, Elmina Castle, Kakum National Park, Canopy walkway, Museums, Art Centre, Markola Market, and Independence Square in Accra etc.
Rules
• Participants applying for this program must have medical backgrounds or professionals in this field or alternatively student seeking to study healthcare as a career.
• Participants encouraged to be flexible, patient, open-minded, respect, abide by the rules of the placement activity, and willing to learn the culture of Ghana.
• Volunteers should communicate openly and respectfully with volunteer coordinators, supervisors etc regarding any challenges, schedule changes, or concerns.
• Safety instructions provided by the host organization should always be followed during activities and travel.
