How Our Women and Youth Volunteer Program Works
Our volunteer program is designed to empower disadvantaged women and young people in Uganda through education, practical skills, digital literacy, financial literacy, and confidence building. Volunteers work alongside our local staff and community facilitators to share knowledge and skills that can improve the lives and livelihoods of participants.
Our Community Learning Groups
We currently work with more than 84 community learning groups, mainly made up of women and young people living in low-income communities, including urban slum areas and hard-to-reach communities near the lakeshores. These communities often have limited access to education, technology, employment opportunities, and other services.
The women’s groups meet twice a week, with each learning session lasting approximately two hours. Different groups meet on different days of the week. Because of this arrangement, volunteers do not remain with only one group. Instead, each volunteer receives a rotation schedule that allows them to visit and support different groups according to the organization’s weekly program.
This rotation gives volunteers the opportunity to meet people from different communities, understand different challenges, and share their knowledge with a wider number of learners.
What Volunteers Can Teach
Volunteers are encouraged to share skills according to their experience and interests. These may include:
English: conversational English, reading, writing, vocabulary, pronunciation, and communication.
Digital literacy: using smartphones, mobile applications, internet services, email, social media, online learning platforms, and other digital gadgets.
Financial literacy: saving, budgeting and vocational practical skills ie baking etc.
