Program Details
All cross-project volunteers support our Recreation and Educational Centre (REC) one to four days a week. Our four Huanchaco Education and Learning Programs (HELP) are carried out there. These programs focus on providing educational opportunities for children from the informal settlement of Cerrito de la Virgen, with each project having its own thematic focus: HELP English, HELP Environment, HELP Youth and HELP Literacy.
In addition, volunteers can participate in a variety of other projects, depending on their interest, including Global Glow (girl education and empowerment, only for Spanish speakers), homework support, English lessons in the library, English lessons at María del Socorro Elementary School.
This position offers an excellent opportunity for people who enjoy working with children while gaining insight into the work of non-governmental organizations. Life in Huanchaco opens up the opportunity to immerse yourself in a new culture and meet many new people. Since this is a very practical activity, you will come into contact with the Spanish language much more often than in some of our office activities. The role is therefore suitable for both Spanish-speaking volunteers and for people who want to improve their Spanish skills.
For volunteers with special skills or previous experience, there is the opportunity to take on additional responsibility and to take on a role as a HELP project coordinator in the areas of English, environment, youth or literacy.
For students, all volunteer positions are also available as internships. This is ideal for students who want to complete a practical year or abroad. In this case, you will receive additional support as well as close coordination with your university to ensure compliance with all requirements for internships.
Activities & Shift
The OCN Recreational and Educational Centre (REC) opens from Monday-Wednesday and on Fridays, from 3-5pm. Each day is designated to a different project. Before each session, the project coordinator will meet with the volunteers at the OCN volunteer house to brief you on the lesson plan for the day, delegate roles, and answer any questions. You will then get a mototaxi to the REC together and assist in running the class. During this time you will have plenty of opportunities to play and interact with the children we help and create a bond with them. You will do this 1-4 days a week, depending on the number of volunteers we have at the time and your preferences.
Each week, there is also a REC meeting hosted at the volunteer house by a member of our management staff, in which HELP project coordinators and volunteers discuss general issues for the REC, such as discipline and attendance, routines, maintenance etc.
Every Monday morning, you will attend a general OCN meeting at the volunteer house to discuss any relevant updates and activities for the week, contribute ideas and feedback, and plan out the activity schedule for the week.
The rest of your schedule will depend on which partner projects you work on, as some take place in the mornings and some in the afternoon.
