Program Details
The usual schedule is approximately 3 hours per day on 5 days per week. The work may be split between the morning and evening rather than completed in one continuous shift.
The main winter tasks are:
• feeding the horses
• mucking out the stable every day
• checking the horses’ water supply
• removing ice from water troughs and buckets during freezing weather
• checking the electric fencing
• applying hoof oil every day
• leading and correctly tying the horses when necessary
• assessing the weather and ground conditions before turnout
• helping to replace the hay round bale when necessary
• change horse-blankets
• occasionally cleaning and preparing a holiday apartment between guest stays
Cleaning a holiday apartment may include changing the bed linen, cleaning the bathroom and kitchen, vacuuming, mopping and preparing everything for the next guests. This will only be required occasionally, will be discussed in advance and will count towards the normal working hours.
Activities & Shift
The animals need care every day, but you will still have 2 genuine days off each week. If you would like to look after them on a free day, you are welcome to do so, but you are not expected.
Rules
Practical horse experience is beneficial but not required.
If you don’t know how to care for horses yet, you will learn to:
• lead a horse safely
• tie a horse correctly
• feed horses according to instructions
• recognise injuries, illness or unusual behaviour
• remain calm and react appropriately if a horse becomes nervous
• assess weather and ground conditions responsibly
The water supply must be checked carefully every day, especially when temperatures are below freezing. The horses must always have access to fresh, unfrozen water.
I will explain the routines and different weather situations thoroughly.
Please treat all animals patiently and respectfully. Staying calm around the horses is particularly important.
The house, furniture and equipment must be treated with care. Please clean up after yourselves, keep the shared areas tidy and leave the house in good condition.
Reliability and honest communication are extremely important. If you do not understand something, feel uncomfortable with a task or notice a problem, please ask rather than guessing.
