Volunteer As English Teacher In Mountain Village Yanasara

The experience

This opportunity is ideal for those who wish to practice their English teaching skills in a remote mountain town, five hours away from Huanchaco. The school doesn’t have enough money to employ well qualified teachers and there is also a problem of finding teachers who are willing to work in the mountains. As a result the primary and secondary schools in the village are understaffed and the children do not receive much English language education.

Program Details

The main task of the volunteers is to give English lessons at the school. In addition, if you wish, you can also teach subjects such as art, sports or other subjects. In the summer of 2009, Otra Cosa donated new musical equipment to the secondary school (including a keyboard, guitars, flutes, clarinets, trumpets, horns, a large drum and smaller drums). If you play an instrument and are interested, you are welcome to offer music lessons for the children.

Activities & Shift

English is not only important for the children of Yanasara, but also for adults who hope to welcome tourists at the hot springs in the future. Teaching for adults is also possible.

Yanasara will be in a unique position to immerse yourself into the Andean way of life and after school you will have time to explore the beautiful mountain area. The valley where the town is situated is at approximately 4000m altitude. At two and a half hours from the nearest town of Huamachuco, you can also take in the charming main square in Huamachuco and the stunning archaeological site of Marcahuamachuco just outside the town. There is no internet connection in this village and to purchase any supplies you must travel by car-pool or combi (small bus) to Huamachuco.

For students, all volunteer positions are available as internships, which is ideal for students looking to complete a year in industry/placement abroad. In this case, you will receive an extra level of mentorship and all appropriate communication with your academic institution to ensure compliance with internship placement requirements.
