Program Details
We are a small cultural exchange project based in Zunyi, a historic city in Guizhou, China, famous for its revolutionary history and beautiful mountain landscapes.
We host international volunteers who want to experience authentic Chinese life and share their culture with local children. You will lead weekly English corners and cultural sessions at a wetland park near our home, and join small group sessions with kids aged 5-12. This is a meaningful cultural exchange role — not a casual travel stay. We are looking for reliable, friendly people who genuinely enjoy working with children and want to contribute to our community.
When you're not leading sessions, you will help with light housekeeping around the shared home: keeping your room tidy, washing dishes, and helping with simple daily chores. We live as a family and share the work together.
What you get:
- Free private room and all meals with a local Chinese family
- Full local support and guidance to explore Zunyi and Guizhou safely
- A genuine cultural experience, far from typical tourist spots
- The chance to make a real difference to local kids' English confidence
Important: all volunteers will have a short video interview before being accepted. We are looking for people with good spoken English, a responsible attitude, and patience with children.
We are two sisters studying at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, with a local team running day-to-day operations.
Activities & Shift
What you'll be doing:
1. Lead our weekly English corner at the wetland park on Saturday morning (1.5 hours) — you will guide kids through English games, vocabulary, and casual conversation
2. Run 1-2 small group sessions per week (1 hour each) with 4-8 kids aged 5-12. You will prepare simple, fun activities in advance.
3. Help with daily light housekeeping: keeping your room clean, washing up after meals, and contributing to shared chores. This takes about 30 minutes a day.
4. Optional: join our weekend cultural outings (hiking, temple visits, local food tours) — these are great opportunities to practice Chinese and see the area.
Time commitment:
- 2-3 activity sessions per week (about 5-6 hours total) + daily light chores (~30 min)
- We expect volunteers to be reliable and committed to the sessions they agree to
- Minimum stay: 2 weeks
- We provide simple activity outlines and support, but you should be comfortable leading small groups on your own.
Requirements:
- Good spoken English (you will be the main English speaker for the kids)
- Experience or natural comfort working with children
- Responsible, punctual, and easy to live with
Rules
We run a respectful, well-organized project. Please read these expectations carefully before applying:
1. Be punctual and committed. If you agree to lead a session, please show up on time. If you need to cancel, give us as much notice as possible.
2. Be patient and positive with children. They are Chinese beginners — speak slowly, use simple language, and encourage them.
3. Keep your room clean and contribute to shared household chores. We all live together and share the work.
4. No smoking or drinking inside the house.
5. Respect local culture and customs. Zunyi is a small city, not a tourist area — please dress modestly and behave respectfully.
6. We provide food and accommodation. You cover your own flights, insurance, visa, and personal expenses.
7. This is a cultural exchange project, not a paid job. We expect you to take your role seriously, but we also want you to enjoy your time here.
8. All applicants will have a short video interview before acceptance. We want to make sure we're a good match.
If you are friendly, responsible, good with kids, and want to experience real China, we'd love to hear from you!
