Rules

Never be alone with a single student behind a closed door or out of sight of another adult.
● No physical discipline, ever β€” if a class is unmanageable, get the local teacher, don't escalate yourself.
● No private one-on-one contact with students outside class (social media, phone numbers, gifts, money) without the local teacher's knowledge.
● Physical affection: let the child initiate (e.g. a handshake or high-five back), and keep it brief and public. Don't initiate hugs or seek closeness with a particular child.
● Touch and greeting norms in Khmer culture: the head is considered spiritually significant in Cambodian Buddhist custom β€” don't pat or touch a student's head without permission, even affectionately. The traditional Khmer greeting is the sampeah (palms together, slight bow) rather than a handshake; volunteers don't need to adopt it, but should recognise it and respond warmly if a student or teacher offers it.
● Kids form attachments to volunteers fast, precisely because you're new and interesting. That's a reason to be thoughtful about how you navigate closeness with any one student β€” warm and consistent with the whole class, not a special favourite.
● Photos and student privacy: see Β§3.4 below.
● If a student discloses abuse or you observe something concerning, do not investigate it yourself. Note exactly what was said/seen, when, and who else was present, and report it immediately to your named on-site contact and to Mark/Sa β€” see Β§3.3.
● Alcohol: none during teaching days; use good judgement about weekends given you're a visible representative of the school.
