Program Details

We are a small, remote Quinta in the mountains of Monchique. We are working towards a more self-sufficient way of living, with the long-term dream of creating a food forest. For now, much of the work is simply keeping up with the land: maintaining fences, watering trees and gardens, clearing vegetation, making firewood and taking care of what is already growing. We also have dogs and many small DIY and maintenance projects. We enjoy sharing our place with people who are practical, independent and happy to get involved.

Activities & Shift

Activities can include gardening, watering, planting and propagating, maintaining fences, clearing land, preparing and moving firewood, processing food from the land, caring for our dogs, cooking and cleaning, composting and small DIY/repair projects. Some technical projects may include water pumps, pipes, electrical maintenance or repairs — these are only for people with the appropriate experience.

We expect around 5 hours per day, 5 days per week. We can usually adapt tasks to your interests, skills and the needs of the land. (For skilled workers its less, please get in touch).

Rules

We live in a remote place and value both community and personal space. We expect volunteers to be respectful, reliable and willing to contribute to everyday life.
Our days start early, with meetings at 8:30 in the morning, so we have a fairly natural daytime rhythm. We ask everyone to respect quiet evenings and avoid late-night work or noise. We like to keep the nights calm so that everyone can start the next day rested.
Having your own transport, or access to a car, is highly recommended. We live in a remote area and public transport is limited. We can pick you up from Monchique village when you arrive and occasionally take you into town, but we cannot provide regular transport.
This is a rural, off-grid environment, so flexibility and independence are important. Please be comfortable with outdoor work, heat, dirt and changing conditions. Take care with water and electricity, as resources are limited.
Keep shared spaces clean and tidy, communicate openly and treat the land, animals, neighbours and other people with respect.
If you are coming alone, please be comfortable spending time independently. There is plenty of nature to explore, but we are not a busy social hostel. 🌿
